Mr. Berry, chief postmaster at Greymouth is at present on a holiday visit to Auckland. Dr. Torrance, of Invercargill, has returned to that town after a twelve months' visit to London hospitals. Mr. F. Waymouth, President of the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, is leav- : ing Bhortly on a visit to England. The Rev. John Law, who was made a supernumerary by the late Wesleyan Methodist. Conference, has taken up his residence in Edward-street, Devonport. Archbishop Redwood, by last mail advices, was in London, and preached at St. Ann's Church. This is the church in which he was consecrated Bishop by Cardinal Manning. Captain Fairchild, of the Government steamer Tutanekai, has recently made some interesting expssriments with carrier ' pigeons, the majority of which reached shore with messages from the steamer at sea. Mr. James McGowau, M.H.R.,is to be a passenger per s.s. Alameda for San Francisco en route for Englaud. He expects to be back in lime for the re-assembly of Parliament in September next, He will arrive in Auckland from Thames to-day (Friday). Our Helensville cm-respondent writes :— A ceremony of a pleasant nature took place hereon April 13, the m.imago of Miss Edith McLeod, daughter of iho Into Mr. I'hillip MeLeod, to Mr. George Wharton, late of London. The Rev. Mr. Gittos, a very old family friend, performed the marriage ceremony. The happy couple left by the four o'clock train the same day for Wellington. A large number of friends were on the platform to see them off, and to wish every happiness to the daughter of their late respected friend, and one of Helensville's—l might truthfully say Kaipara's— pioneers, and her husband. Our Aroha correspondent writing on Thursday says: — The local Wesleyan Church was the scene of a popular wedding on Wednesday afternoon, the occasion being the marriage of Miss F. G. Maingay, for many years organist in the church, to Rev. W. J. Elliot, lately ordained to the Wesleyan Church at Balclutha. The church was crowded to excess, large numbers being unable to get admission. The ceremony was performed by Rev. S. Lawry, of Onehunga (a personal friend of the contracting parties), assisted by Rev. S. Griffith, minister of the circuit. There wero three bridesmaids, Misses M. E. Maingay, Bell, and Elliott; and Messrs. T. and G. Elliott acted as groomsman. This having been the first wedding which has taken place in the church since its erection, Rev. S. Griffith presented the bride with a handsome copy of the Wesleyan Hymnal. After the ceremony, the guests adjourned to the bride's late residence, where an ample repast was served, and various speeches appropriate to the occasion were delivered. The newly-married couple left for Morrinsville en route for Auckland, and afterwards for the South, amidst the good wishes of all present. The presents to bride and bridegroom were very numerous and handsome. A pleasant gathering took place in the Te Aroha Wesleyan Church, the occasion being a farewell social and presentation to Miss F. G. Maingay, orpanist to the church, in view of her approaching marriage to the Rev. W. J. Elliott, of Balclutha. The Rev. S. Griffith, minister of the circuit, made a short speech, in which be eulogised Miss Maingay for her long and faithful services as organist, she having acted in that capacity for the last twelve years. The Rev. E. J. McFarland (Anglican) and Mr. Priestly, as president and secretary respectively of the United , Christian Endeavour Society, both testified to her valuable service as organist i ,to the society, and the former, on beft . half of the members, presented her with P . a beautiful gold brooch bearing the Society's *§?£ badge.
