From this it appears that in 1896 Liverpool took the lead in wheat imports with 18,868,000cwt; Hull was next with 13,173,000cwt; London followed with 11,832,000; and the other specified ports came as under :—Bristol, 4,293,000cwt ; Leith, 2,096,0000wt; Newcastle, 1,414,000 cwt ; Dublin, 1,298,000cwt; Cork, 1,238,000 cwfc: Glasgow, l,146,00Oowt; Belfast, 231,000cw1!j and all other ports, 17,000,000, making a total of 72,609,000cwfc. As regards flour, London was easily first with 6,402,000 cwt; Liverpool next with 4,690,000cwt ; and then follow the other specified porta thus:- Glasgow, 3,846,0000wt; Leith, 1,387,000cwt; Belfast, 946,0000wt; Bristol, 923,000cwt ; Dublin, 657,000cwt ; . Hull, 607,000cwt; Newcastle, lOS.OOOowt; and all other ports, 1.000.0000wt, making » total of 20,566,000cwt. The Amateur Athletic Union in the United States have decided that "in national championship meetings no person not a member in good standing of an Amateur Athletic Union Club, nor a member of one ot the organisations allied with the Amateur Athletic Union shall be allowed to compete." In the interest of national and international ■ports of all kinds this decision is much to be regretted, and it marks a retrograde movement in American athletics, which the Spirit of the Times does not hesitate to refer to as "absurd, mischievous, and cowardly."
