The Amateur Athletic Union in the United States have decided that "in national championship meetings no person not a member in good standing of an Amateur Athletic Union Club, nor a member of one ot the organisations allied with the Amateur Athletic Union shall be allowed to compete." In the interest of national and international ■ports of all kinds this decision is much to be regretted, and it marks a retrograde movement in American athletics, which the Spirit of the Times does not hesitate to refer to as "absurd, mischievous, and cowardly."
