The British Board of Trade returns for January show a falling-off in the number of sheep imported as compared with the corresponding month of the two preceding years. The total was 34,901, as against 59,784 in January, 1896, and 66,205 in January, 1895. The following figures showing the number sent during the first month of the year from the United States and Argentina respectively are curious :—

In January last year the number was 1139, the total value £14,209, and the average per bead £12 9s. ; In January, 1895, the number was 740, but the value was exceptionally high, amounting to £11,468, or an average of £15 per head.. : ■ . ; ' '...■>. f
