NEW ZEALAND OftOWN MINES (LIMITED). In order to obtain further particulars of the new method of treating the ore at the Crown Mines, Mr. R. It. Hunt (general manager of the flew Zealand Crown Mines) was seen and asked for information, which he courteously accorded. " The machinery which has arrived by the 5.6. Mamari," he said in reply to the first question put to him, "consists of a Riedler horizontal air compressor with cylinders 16 inches by 25 inches and 42 inches stroke, with its parts, and an air cooler, circulating pumps, air receivers, etc. This is to be at once sent forward to the Crowu mine, to be installed in a hugo cavity which has been blasted out of the solid rock in the aide of the Waitawheta Gorge. A similar cavity lias been blasted out on the opposite side of the 'Jorge for the two air roceivers, which will also be seut forward immediately. The Pelton water wheel to drive this machinery has already arrived from San Francisco; this will be placed in the same cavity us the compressor. The new water-race, one and ahalf miles long, is in it forward state of completion, the Kauri Timber Compuny being engaged now in sending in'the timber cut to shape for the race. This contract of timber alone was £2250. The pumping and winding engines hhve also arrived trom London, and, in a couple of months it is hoped to have the water running through the flume, which, in its turn will drive the Pelton wheel, while giving its power by belting to the compressor. Tim com pressed air will cross the river by piping to the air receivers, and from thence will be taken to the No. 6 level of the mine by the new inclined shaft, where the pumping and winding engines ire being placed. The air compressor is capable of producing ISO horse-power, and will not only drive the pumps and winding gear, but will furnish the air reijuiied for the rock drills, of which there will be a great number. It is iuteuded to do all the driviue by power drillers rather than by hand, in order to expedite the opening of the mine. September, at the latest, it is considered, should see this machinery fixed and in place. The sinking of the inclined shaft in the No. 6 level will proceed apace as soon as the pumping and winding gear arc in operation. At present all work below the No. 6 level is suspended o.ving to the small pump now in use being unable to do the duty required of it, Uelow tho No. 6 level, however tho mine has been opened out and shows a reef 15 feet wide. The ore as taken out from wall gives an average value of J35 IS* per ton.' 1 " What of the battery improvements you have been making ?" " Well the wet process which Mr. Daw has been improving, has proved a great success. He has been running five head of stamps with it for two or three mouths, and he claims that the results will revolutionise the process of treating the Karaiigalmke ores, ailtlj indeed, all the ore in the locality. The process is one of wet crushing, with a solution of cyanide in the stamper boxes. He practically does away with drying the ore by fire, completely does away with the dirt nuisance, crushes two tons against one ton by tho old process and obtains n a higher percentage from the ore than was possible before. The details of the process are not yot mado public, as Mr. Daw considers they are the property of his directors. They, however, have cabled instructions to give the Wnihi Gold Miuiug Company the benefit of the discovery. Mr. Uarfy, of the Wiiihi, has been twice at the Grown buttery, and has beeu shown all the ins and outs of the process. It will thus be seen that the Crown directors are not disposed to play dog in the manger, but are liberally throwing open the new process to other mine owners. If the process turns out the auccees Mr. Daw believes it will, from his experience with the live head of stamps for three months, it must revolutionise the treatment of ores in the Kftrnngahakfii Waihi, and Waitekauri dintriois," " The Crown mines are adopting it!" " Yes. The Crown battery of 40 stamps is being it once converted from dry to wee crushing; and a contract has been made by Mi'. Daw with Messrs. Seager Brothers, engineers of Auckland,, for 13 steel tanks to contain the extra amount of ore. The bittery therefore will crush double the quantity it did; that is the 40 head of stamps will do, in the oourse of another month of two, the same work as 80 head did, In the meantime, till the new plant we first spoke of is fit to work, the mine will be opened out to its fullest extent, when it is iutended bv the Crown directors to put up another battery of at least 40 stamps, to be ready by tho time the mine is opened out to provide the one to supply it." " Can you say anything as to the coat of treatment by this new process ?" "It follows if it costs a certain sum with a 40 stamp battery, all tho dead charges, eiioh as manager's salaries, metallurgist's charges, rent of mine, interest on money, etc, will simply be cut down by hall. And there must be a further immense reduction in snch charges directly the company oan work niiother battery of 40 stamps; for thin will probably be so constructed as to give a better duty thau that which crushes two tone pet , stamp per day. You will, therefore, see that the future of the mine is distinctly hopeful, and steady advance may certainly be looked for in the future. Like all others iu the Peninsula, the stomps now in use are light; the new ones can be made heavier bo that a better duty per stamp may confidently be expected." " Yoa have also otheir large works in hand, ha»B you taotf asked out rtpresentfttitfe iu conclusion. " When the important works in hand are completed," replied Mr, Hunt, it ia intended to erect an electrical installation to light up, the mine by electricity, «nd, at thesame time provide power for driving the battery by eleotricity fro ni the Waitewbetawater-ra.ee, which power will be intended as a supplementary one to the present Water power 1 , derived froth the Ohinemuri race. There is ah tden« also* to convert the present horse traotion in the tramway into eleetrio traotion. But of course all thjs immense amoent of work will take time to accomplish, but I think I have said sufficient to show you that in the near future the Crown will be ia the front tank of geld
