THE QUEEN'S CELEBRATION YEAR.

During the last few weeks there liai beep & Urqe amount of canvassing ag to the form which should be taken by the Auckland memorial in celebration of the completion of the sixtieth yeai of Her Majesty's reign. The general opinion seems to be that some institu., tion of a charitable nature should h< founded, which should be a permanent memorial of Her Majesty's beneficent rule. The subject should be thoroughly discussed, in order that the most worthy object should be selected, upon which the efforts of all might; b< concentrated. The subject was brought up at the last meeting of the Git* Council. The Mayor and councillors ought certainly to take the lead of the citizens in this matter, but unfortunately His Worship the Mayor Las not sufficiently recovered from his indisposition to take an active part at oncji A committee of the Council was appointed to consider the most suitable method of celebrating the recoid reign, with the understanding that the suggestions would be brought before the Council as a whole, and that a public meeting could then be called. We presume thai the committee have been engaged in carrying out the task entrusted to them, and that at next meeting of Council they will bring up a report. Nothing should, however, be decided on till i public meeting has been called, anil > perhaps one meeting will not be suffr cient to settle the question. We have strength only for one good project, and it should carry as nearly as possible the unanimous good wishes of the citizeni of Auckland.
