TO THK EUITOK. Sir,—" Pro Bono Pnblico" makes a preal mistake if he thiuks the leading streets in Auckland will bear favourable comparison with the streets of any city in the colonies. I am well acquainted with the adioim'ng colonies, and with the South Island of Ne* Zealand. 1 call Shortlandstreet aleadiif street of Auckland, and 1 do not hesitate to say that, the condition in which it is allowed to remain, especially the upper part of it, is* disgrace to every citizen, awl would not h tolerated in any second-class Australian or South Island city. In the hot weather of the past summer I could, whilst daily pas , ing through Shovcland-strcet, repeat with truth the poet's description of Cologne when he says— I counted two-ami-twenty stenches All well-drtined, ami several stinks. Daring the night, or very early w the morning, the cab-staiuls are swept scrupulously clean and dusted over with carbolic disinfectants, and sewer cratinp are treated in the same way. Tim back yards of poor dwellings houses are all pared with " sets " aud kept remarkably cleM.
