BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary ineetiug of the Board of Education was held yesterday when there were present: Messrs. Muir, Reed, Harris, Udy, Hobbs, Woodward, Wright, and Luke. On the motion of the retiring chairman (Mr, Muir), seconded by Mr: Harris, Mr. Luke was elected chairman of the Board for the incoming year, and after returning thanks took his scat accordingly. Vote of Thanks.—Before proceeding with the ordinary business a vote of thanks to Mr. Muir for the manner iu which he had conducted the business, while officiating as chairman duriug the outgoing year, was unanimously adopted. Mr. Muir returned thanks. Welcome.—The Chairman on behalf of the Board welcomed the two recently elected members, Messrs. Hobbs and Reed. Both gentlemen returned thanks. Accounts.—The statement of assets and liabilities iu connection with the building fuud for the quarter ending March 31st, showed assets £3528 10s 10d and liabilities £3232 Us 11 J, leaving a credit balance of £296 3s lid. The works authorised but not yet begun amount to £2865, which on completion would leave a debit ot £2558 lCs Id. The grant for 1897-98 is estimated at £9500. The maintenance account for a similar term shows assets £10,026 6s 2d aud liabilities £811013s 7d, showing an excess of assets over liabilities of £1915 12a 7d. The expenditure for the quarter was £20,937 3s 10d, aud income £30,911 M, beiuß a debit balance of £25 18s lOd.

Building Vote.-In reply to the late chairman's telegram, asking that adequate provision be made tor school building requiremeuts until Parliament meets again, the Minister of Education wired to the effect that the matter would be duly coneidcred.

Chairman's Report.—The report of the chairman, amongst other things, stated that resignations have been received from Mrs. J. Skeen, assistant, Chapel-street School; Miss B. C. Greatbatch, assistant, Newton East; Miss ]i. A. Souster, pupil teacher, Nelsou - street. Temporary arraugemeuts have been made to enable Mr. A. E. Trayes to act as relieving teacher to Ponaouby, and Miss L. E. Walker from Riverheacl to Parnell as temporary relieving teacher, The report was adopted. Sklkction of Teachers.—The Teachers' Selection Committee in their report recommended that the following appointments should be authorised by the Board;— Mr. W. W. Mclntosli, to be headmaster of Oiiehunga School, Mr. H. B. Wilson to be headmaster of Aratapu School, from July 1; Mr. D. L. Smart, to be head teacher of Tamaki West School; Mr. J. Murray, to be teacher of Te Kowhai School; Miss A. 8. Hyatt, to be teacher ot Tamahere School; Miss B. Carnachan, to be teacher of Wayby School; Mids M. F. llonaii, to be teacher of Wainui School; Miss I l '. J. Baston, to be teacher ot Otaker. School; Mr. J. C. Mill, to be fifth assistant Richmond Road School; Mr. A. McGregor, lo b>; second assistant Driving Creek School; MtasK. Ridings, to be fourth assistant Newton East School ; Miss K. A. Taylor to be second assistant, Northcote school; Miss K. Keesing, u> be assistant Bombay school; Miss L. Wilson, pupil teacher from Tauranga, to KatiKati No. 2 school; Miss M. Johnston, pupil teacher from Napier-street to Northcote school. The Coininittco recommended that school committees be consulted in regard to several following uroposed appointments :— Taiina, Mr, M. F. Dily; Waiotcmarama, Mr. M. H. Moon; Wharehine, Miss L. F. Walker; Kaipara Flats, Miss F. L. Mellso|ip; Timing* Graek, Mr, B. Bedford, Mr. W. M. Gellinft Miss E. Sinclair; Bayfield (second assistant), Miss M. A. Field ; Cambridge, Miss A. Reynolds; Miranda, Miss M. M. Findliiy (temporarily). The committee recommended that a number of candidates be taken into employment as pupil teachers, subject to the regulations dated February, 1897, and located at the schools named: — Miss Rose Poland, Beresford-street; Miss Agnes M. O'Meara, Hereford-street; Miss Emily Culleus, Napier-street: Miss Isabella D. Runcimau, Napier-street; Miss Florence H. G. Richardson, Nelson-street; Miss Alice M. Angove, Parnell; Miss Violet F. Boswell, Avondale; Miss Ellen M, Piggott, Taupalti; Miss Roberta E. A. Jones, Helensville; Miss Jane Johusou, Maiingaturoto; Miss Nellie M. Fisher, Mayfields Miss Bertha Uragg, Waiwera; Miss Florence XL Hewitt, Opu*; Miss Janet G. Jones, Punakitere; Miss Elizabeth Graham, Awanui; Miss Amy MeClune, Tamahero; Mr, Geo. H. Smith, MaUkana. The committee submitted for consideration twenty-three ('23) applications received in answer to advertisemeut for the headmastership of the Epsom school. The report was adopted as read. Grammar Scuool Governors.—The retiring member of the Aucklaud College and Grammar School Board of Governors, Mr. Luke, was unanimously re-elected to the vacancy occasioned by his retirement in accordance with regulations. Teacher* Selection Committee.—On the motion of Mr. R. (Jdy, Messrs. Hobba, Muir. Reed, and the Chairman (Mr. S. Luke) were appointed a Teachers Selection Committee for the ensuing year.

Whasgarei High School.-The Rev. L. L. Cubitt and Mr, W. A. Carruth, the retiring members, were unanimously re-elected to the Bo»rd of Governors of the Whangarei High School.

Truant Officer's Report.—The Tnwnt Officer, in an exhaustive report on his duties duriug the past twelve months, referring to the attendance of children at the various public schools, stated that many children continued to evade regular attendance by flitting from one school to another. Every year as the school examinations approached he found numbers of children about the streets, who on being asked the reason of their absence informed him that they bad been told to remain away from school until after the examinations were over. It appeared that these children were those whom it was anticipated, would have very little prospect of passing the examinations. He cited n number ot instances that had been brought under his notice, ami gave the schools from which they had absented themselves. It was resolved, after a brief discussion, to write to the head masters of the schools in question for an explanation on the report befor.e dealing further with the matter The general opinion was that stringent steps should be taken.

TENDERS.-The tender of Mr. Wyatt (£155 12s 6d), being the lowest of the four received tor the erection of the Pakiri school building, was accepted. That of Mr. James (£3B 15s) for repairs to the Taupiri school, iind that of Mr. Coldham (£93 10a) for repairs to the Waitekauri school were also accepted, Epsom School Hkadjiastership.-Tlio names of the 23 applicants for the position of headmaster of the Epson School were read. After a brief discussion, Mr. Reed moved, "That the whole be forwarded to the local committee, for the selection of a master." This was negatived, and it was ultimately resolved, on the motion of the Chairman, that 10 names be submitted, the Chief Inspector to confer with the Board, as to the most suitable candidates. The consultation held, it was decided to submit the names of Messrs. Chapman,' Muljsan, Ohlson, Purdie, J. Campbell. Thwaitca, Elliot, Whitaker, Burton, and Fisher. Establishment of Schools.—Applicatious from Frankton and Kauaeraujia Valley for the establishment of new schools was declined. Similar application* from Ruakaka and Tokatea were referred to the inspector to report on and deferred pending the consultation or the Driving Creek School Committee respectively. BniLDiSGs.-Messrs. Wright and Hobbs were Appointed to confer with the Bayfield School Committee m to the advisability of adding to the accommodation of the schools or the erection of a new school, as suggested by the committee. Mr. Salmon, a member of the Taupn School Committee, waited upon the Board in support of the application for a new school building. After some discussion, it was agreed, on the motion of Mr. Reed, seconded by Mr. Hobbs, that the architects be instructed to prepare plans and call tenders for the erection of a lohool, u requested.
