THE DUTY ON OARS.
(by telegraph.—press association.] Wellington, Friday. A deputation from the Now Zealand Rowing Association waited on the Premier this afternoon urging the removal of duty on oare. They had (so VV, H. Fiold, the spokoman said) no desire to go ouleide while the article manufactured in the colony was equal to that imported, bur at present it was nob so. The duty of 20 per cent, militated against the encouragement) of athletic sports. Mr. Seddon said they could not expect a defhito reply today as a question of public policy was involved. It m necessary that- tho fullest information should be obtained from both sides, and he would then consult the Cabinet. The sum involved wns not groat, but tho principle had to be considered. His sympathy was with the sport of the.oolony and every encouragement oHirht to be offered to physical and mental exercise.
