At the County Council meeting, this evening, it was decided to grant Mr. Prentice, who wrote re a scheme for a tramway at the Thames, from Tararu Point to the racecourse a concession for 12 months to construct such tramway through the portion of the county from the south boundary of the borough to Parawai along the county main road, A letter was also received from Messrs. Bewicko, Moreing, and Go., of the Whnngamata Proprietary Company, backed up by a petition from several claim holders at Whangamata and Wharekawa, employing a total of 69 men, urging upon the county the necessity of constructing a waggon road from the Whangamata Harbour up the Wharekawa Valley beyond the Whangamata Proprie.. tary battery site, the distance being about six miles. Unless' the Council authorises this road operations will be greatly retarded owing to the difficulty of getting machinery on the ground. The chairman (Mr. Dunlop) pointed out the necessity of inquiring as to the prospects of machinery being erected, and suggested that the engineer should visit locality to gain an estimate of the cost of the proposed road and other information, and a proposition being put to that effect was carried. Mr. Corbett stated that the properties at Whangamata were considered exceedingly valuable, and lie had' no doubt as. to the genuineness, of the appeal. '/ ;•»■*• ':. •
