A special meeting of the Einance ami Endowment Committee of the City Council was held yesterday afternoon to consider the accounts, as submitted by the Keturiiinj; Officer, in connection with the recent licensing election. Mr. J. -Treuwith (chairman of committee) presided, and there were present: Messrs. Stitchbury, Patter* iron, Grey, and the Town Clerk. The accounts, as submitted, amounted to £109 12s 6d. The chairman and Messrs. Stitchbury, and Patterson took exception to the charges and nature of several of the accounts. Mr. Grey said there appeared to be no alternative than to pay the sum asked for. Mr. Stitchbury said he was of the same opinion. The chairman thought the Council should protest. Mr. Patterson characterised the whole thing as "monstrous." It was eventually reiolved:— "The Committee authorise an advance of £50, and refer the accouut to the Council, with a view of their consideration and bringing the same under the notice of. the Government, as they consider these elections could be much more economically administered by the Council's Returning
