NEWTON.

The usual meeting of the Newton Borough Council took place last evening in their offices. Present: Messrs. J. W. Shackelford (Mayor), Donald, S. C. Brown, J. Stewart, Ambury, Webley, and Sexton. On the motion of i-iie Mayor, it was decided to convey the sympathy of the Council to Mr. R. T. Warnoc'i with reference to his recent accident, A letter" was read from Mr. Barnes, of Karcourt-scrnet, asking that scoria bo laid on certain parts of the street in question, Tho request was acceded to. Mr, R. Downey w(ote asking the formation of a portion of the footpath in front of his residence in Princeps-street. The request) was granted. A similar request from Mr. Davenport with reference to the footpath in Millaie-streefe was also granted, The Mayor gave notice to more ae the next regular meeting that a rate of la in the £ on all assessable property in the Borough of Newton, bo struok on the 3rd May, the same to be payable on Tuesday, June Ist. The Mayor road the statement of estimated expenditure for the forthcoming year, and pointed out that the amount required would be £866. The report of the Streets Committee recommended that the footpaths of Salisbury-street be trimmed, and that tho approaches to the Sackville Road Bridge be repaired. No recommendation was offered with reference to the proposed formation of Salisbury-street. Tho report was adopted. NEWMARKET. Tho usual meeting of the Newmarket Borough Council was held yesterday evening, when there were present: His Worship the Mayor, and Messrs. Spooner, Whyman, McColl, Edgerley, Lee, Angus. A petition from residents of Kew-stroet, Carlton Gore Road, and Hill-street, asking that the drain through Captain Campbell's property be improved, was referred to the Streets Committee. The Parnell Borough Council wrote, on the suggestion of the City Council, asking for conditions as to a supply of water through Newmarket for the higher levote of Parnell. It was resolved to deter consideration in order to allow inquiries to be made from the City Council.

ONEHUNGA. The ordinary meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. D. A. Sutherland), Messrs. Colledge, Nixon, Burden, Dunwoodie, Patten, Hill, Rowo, and Laking. Public Library.— It was decided that the Council in committee bring up a report and propare specifications with the view of leasing tho above property. Finance.—The Treasurer read his usual statement:, which showed a credit balance on each account as follows:—General account, £106 4s 9il; waterworks account, £207 '-a Id; recreation reserres account, £108 16s lOd ; contractor's deposit account, £38; Domain account, £4 16s; due to borough fund £99 93 3d. Solicitor's Charges.—Messrs. Russell and Campboll requested payment of their account, which has been owing for four years. Referred to the Council in committee.

Hack Races.—Mr. G, Slator, lessee of the reserve, applied for permission to hold a hack racing meeting on the reserve. Mr. Laking moved that the request bo refused. He considered it would be a disgrace to the town to allow horse racing next to a cemetery. It was decided to refer the request to the Council in committee. Mandkau Water Supply.—Mr, Hogg wrote asking what steps the Council wero taking to supply the adjacent) districts with wator. The Town Clerk was instructed to reply that tho Council is advertising the business according to law. Improvement to Reserves.—Tho couucil in committee recommend certain improvements to the reserves such as planting trees, etc. It was agreed that a reward of £5 be offered for the best dosign for carrying out this work.
