THE MULVANEY LETTER.

MR. HISLOP AND THE PREMIER.

LIVELY CORRESPONDENCE. [by teliqraph. -own correspondent.] Wellington, Monday. I understand that a very lively correspondence has taken place between the Premier and the Hon. Mr. Hislop. The position is this:—ln the evidence at the recent election inquiry ib waa stated that Air. Hislop had paid a sum of £40 to Mulvanay, bub it was shown at (he same time that this was long before the last election, and that the transaction was money due to Mulvnney on a policy of insurance, the whole affair being one between solicitor and client. The Premier in his Petone speech referred to it as a corrupt paymenb by Mr. Hislop for the purposes of the eleotion, This called forth a very strong letter from Mr. Hialop. To thin the Premier replied in n letter which Mr. Hislop describes as a misrepresentation of facts. The next letters from the parties cross each other. Mr. Hi?lop describes the Premier's statement! as inventions wnich only a " simple word" could adequately describe. He next denouuees the Premier's statement as " malicious, mendacious, and false." I learn that Mr. Hislop has reserved to himself the right of publishing these letters, and that they will prohably be circulated shortly in pamphlet form,
