ATHLETIC SPORTS.

CRICKET.

AUCKLAND 11. V. LICENSED VICTCALLERS. ' This match, which was commenced on the Domain on Saturday, created more than usual interest, as if Auckland wins it practically gives the North Shore C.C. the junior cup for 1896-97. Auckland winning the toss, decided to bat, and remained at the wickets the whole afternoon, putting up the big score of 151 runs for the loss of 7 wickets, thanks chiefly to Beale (43, not out) and Kenderdine (39), both of whom played good cricket for their runs. Lundon, who made 24, also kept the fieldsmen very busy. The match will be concluded next Saturday.

This season's cricket matches, under the auspices of the local association, were concluded to-day by Tararu I. playing off its unfinished matches with Rovers I. and United I, respectively. In the match with Rovers, the Tararu team was defeated by 18 runs, but in the match with United they were successful by four runs, the respective totals being, United 114 and Tararu 118. The Tararu Club thus wins the local Renior championship, having only been defeated but once during the seasou, aud that by the Rover Club as mentioned above.

THE COMING FOOTBALL SEASON. Several of the local football clubs have already held their annual meetings, and even at this early date preparations in connection with the incoming season have been commenced in some quarters. The Auckland Ruzhy Union will hold their annual meeting on Tuesday of next week, after which operations will be vigorously pushed on, and the season formally opened with the usual practice matches. As far as can be seen at present there will be several changes in the ranks of the senior teams, mostly in the form of additions, . North Shore, it is anticipated, will have the services of three players from the Permanent Force, all recent arrivals from Wellington; Suburbs expect to get hold of two well-known Waikato forwards in C. Speight ai»l J. Gillett, and Parnell have added the Wairarapa fullback, D'Arcy, to their ranks. There will bo very little "foreign" football this year, the Southern teams in most instances having visited Auck-. land last year.

LAWN TENNIS.

There was a very good attendance of members at the Eden and Epsom lawns on Saturday for the last day of the season. The courts were kept fully occupied the whole afternoon. Some regrets were expressed at the early closing of the lawns now that a spell of settled weather appears to have arrived, but it is absolutely necessary that work should he commenced at once if the lawns are to be ready for the New Zealand Championship meeting next Christmas. Although the tenuis lawns will be closed the croquet section intend having an " at home" on the croquet lawn this week to finish up their season. This addition to the tennis courts has been a great success this year, many of the tennis players taking a mallet occasionally when unable to get on the tennis court. The final round of the Ladies' Handicap Sineles for the prize presented by Major Peel was won by Miss Stella Rice (receiving l.)J) after a well-contested match with hor sister, Miss Rice (receiving 15), the scores being 6—5, li— A meeting of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association will be held shortly to arrange matters for the New Zealand Association Championship Meeting next season. In spite of the distance from town the Eden and Epsom ground seems to bo the best suited lor a meeting of this kind, more especially as there will be six courts available for play next season, which should be ample for any number of matches that may have to be played; A match arranged between the Otahuhu and Papakura Clubs was played at the Otahuhu lawn on Saturday last, and resulted in a draw, each club winning four sets, The scores are as iollow ;—Messrs. P. A. Vaile and W. Shcppard (0.) beat Air. McLennan and Miss Ada Fallwell (P.) : 11-4. Messrs. C. Selby and C. Howard (0.) beat Messrs. McLennan and Todd (P.I: 9—2. Misses Alice and Ada Fallwell (P.) beat MUses C. Sturge.i and A. Gay (0.): 9-0. Messrs. K. Gratton ahd M. Fallwell (P.) beat Misses P. Gray and E. Gould (0.): 9-5. Mr. Vaile and Miss SMirgcs (0.) beat Mr. MoLeunan and Miss Alice Fallwell (P.): 11-9. Mr. A. Eallwell and Miss Ada Pallwell (P.) beat Mr. W. Sheppard and Miss A. Gray (0.): 9-5. Mr. F. Long and P. Gray (0.) beat Mr. McLeunan and Miss E. Gratton (P.) ; 9-6. Mr. Todd and Miss Fallwoll (P.) beat Mr. Selby and Miss E. Gould (0.) 9-5. The weather was perfect and the matches were interesting, so a very pleasant afternoon was spent both by the players and the fair number of onlookers present. Afternoon tea was provided by the Otahuhu ladies. The Otahuhu club has only been in existence for two seasons, hut has a really first-class lawn, which would compare most favourably with any club lawn in town. Mr. G. B. Huttoii is the president, Miss Wingate and Mr. P. A. Vaile vice-presidents, and Mr. Alf. Sturges, jun„ secretary.
