THE EASTERN CRISIS.

MR. GLADSTONE AND CRETE.

STATEMENT BY MR. BALFOUR.

THE PEACE OF EUROPE. Press Association.— Electric Telegraph.— London, April 3. Mr. Gladstone, in a letter dealing with the Cretan question, says the Powers are not entitled to choose a ruler for Crete. The Cretans are entitled to claim the appointment of a ruler if they are disposed to recognise the Ottoman Suzerainty.

In the House of Commons Mr. Balfour replying to Mr. Labouchere said the freedom of Crete would certainly be secured, but lie was unable to speak with the same confidence as to the prospects of the maintenance of the peace of Europe.
