Advices from Rio state that a Portuguese named Conselheii'O, who claims to be the Messiah, is entrenched with eight thousand followers at Canudas, a province of Baliia. The rebels defeated a Government force of fifteen hundred, killing the General, thirty officers, and six hundred men, besides capturing the artillery. They massacred the wounded and mutilated the bodies.
A force of seven thousand men is starting from Bahia to supprese the rising. ________
