As a sample of the way tho mails to here are managed I may state that the HOWSpapers from both Coromnndel and Paeroa of the 31st March were delivered here oarly to-day, but the latest Auckland papers yet to hand are those of 30th March. Steps are being taken by a strong committee to collecb funds for tho temporary protection of lands subject to the floods in the Ahuriri Plains, and to promote legislation giving power for the union of all local bodies interested in carrying out a comprehensive scheme of rivor conservation. CmtiSTOHORCH, Friday. The first) number of the New Zealand Cyclist, a weekly journal entirely devoted to cycling, was issued from the Lyttelton Times office to-day. Woodvillk, Friday. The Rev. Colenso was thrown out of a buggy on the Woodland Road today. His right elbow joint was badly smashed, and the doctor fears Mr, Colenso will not regain the use of his arm, Wellington , , Friday.
At a meeting of citizens this afternoon, resolutions were carried favouring the construction of a graving dock, and urging that a public meeting be called for tho discussion of the question. The Ballance Memorial statue will be unveiled by the Premier on Wednesday noxt, not Tuesday, as at first intended. The Wining Bureau is now open in charge of Mr. P. Oalvin, a well-known journalist. A journal will be issued in connection with the Bureau. So far 174 old ago applications have beon received, of which 20 are under age, At the Land Board dissatisfaction was expressed by members at the system of loading bush country with 6s per acre for roadi. Mr. Hogg said they had to pay increased rent, but roads were nob made for years. The Commissioner agreed that the practice caused much friction, and he would see whether the system could not be discontinued in some cases.
