A correspondent, over the signature of "T.A.T.," referring to a paragraph which appeared in our columns the other day upon the class of plants known as sundews (Drosera rotundifolia), says:—"These are common in New Zealand, though not, bo so far as I know, plentiful in the Auckland district. There are several varieties.,, all with a common appearance, and only greatly different in size. In the subalpine districts of the West Coast of the South Island, I have found them small,' yet hungry. I once gathered some of the plants on that big quartzite boss, at Murray Creek, and took them down to Keefton to a Mr. Hindmarah there, who was curious in such matters. We "fed "them with small pieces of raw beef, which .they "took "readily, and absorbed all the colouring matter from it, leaving in a few hours but colourless morsels. In the warm valleys of Nelson, they are comparatively large plants, with flower stalks a foot high in some favoured places. I have seen small specimens near Dungog, north of Newcastle, New South Wales, so the plant has a wide distribution. The plants are covered with a hair-like growth, and at the end of each hair is a viscid secretion which forms a trap for unwary flies. Directly any animal matter touches these viscid drops, the neighbouring ones all close round it, and firmly bind and finally absorb the juices of the entangled prey." The Rawlins's Scholarship examinations begin on Monday morning at , half-past nine, in the Wellesley-street East school. There were 43 applications, but the trustees disqualified four boys, as not being the sons of poor parents within the meaning of the will.
