4 T tlx* date of the census (April last) there were 299 sawmills and sash and door manufactories in operation against 243 in 18S6- »<> increase of 56, or at the rate of 23 per cent.
The* North Island has, by the returns, 155 mills, and the Middle Island 144. Tho hands employed in theso mills increased during the quinquennium at a (till greater rate, tho figures beintr 4059 parsons for 18S1G, and 3266 for 1891 : increase 793, or 24 per cent. Four of the hands employed in 1896 were females. The number of hands given in the returns does not include everyone employed in connection with tho industry, as there are many men engaged in the bush work not included. Further particulars are as underl. Value of land, buildings, machinery, and plant: April, 1896, £573.422; April, 1891, £500,272 increase, £73,150, or 14 62 per cent. 2. Value of nil manufactures during 1895 and 1890: 1895, £898,807; 1890, £832,959; increase, £65,848, or 791 pet cent. Tho value of the export of timber for 1895 was £148,995.
