•AUCKLAND AMATEUR ATHLETIC : ; ; AND CYCLE CLUB.; . ; •That most popular of all athletio bodies,' the Auckland Anmteur Athletio and Cycle Club, held their thirth-fourth carnival at the Domain Cricket Ground on Saturday, the 2lßti November. As on all previous occasions, the function passed off without a single hitch to mar its harmony, the management, which was complete .in every detail, being subjected to most favourable Comment on all hands, and highly creditable to a body that is looked upon as the best oonducted and most papular of its kind in the colonies. The attendance numbered about sir thousand persons. The pedestrian starting machine, invented by Mr. B. A. Laurie, was 'given its first trial in public. The machine did all that had been claimed for it by tho inventor, the fields leaving the starting gates in every instance simultaneously.''Messrs. P. W. Edwards, A. H. Cotter, and T. B. O'Connor (the judges), and Messrs. J. Marshall, G. Dnnnctt, and G. Reid (timekeepers) proved most efficient officials. The results are as under'

Reynolds, who held the Domain record for the mile (2m. 30i.) gave an exhibition ride, with the object of lowering his own record. Messrs Dexter aiid Crozier paced him for the first two laps on a rambler tandem, and the third aud fourth laps were taken up by Henning and Graham respecpectively. The champion covered the half-mile in lm. 135., although there was a very strong southerly breeze blowing. Reynolds appeared to lose a trifle at the commencement of the last lap, yet he lowered his record by a couple of seconds, and when 2m. 27 3-5 s. was shown on the result board, the champion was loudly applauded. . 440 Yards Hurdles Handicap. AUCKLAND CYCLING CLUB'S FIRST • CASH CARNIVAL There was a very large attendance of enthusiasts on the 14th of Nov., the total being estimated at close upon 8000. The meeting can only be described as a pronounced success, both as regards the racing and the management. The following are the results 100 yards Challenge Race. The first event on the programme was a challenge race between J. C. Dunster, of Coromandel, and J. W. Callaway, of the Thames, over the 100 yds distance, for £25 aBide., Duiister proved the fleeter of foot and won by about three yards, Tho time was 10 4-ss. . One Mile Maiden Bicycle Handicap. A. Otago, was commenced at Dunedin on November 7, and continued on November 9. Otago wou by nine wickets. WEST END ROWING CLUB. The above Club held an "At Home" on November 14, and provided quite an attractive bill of fare for their friends and patrons, There was a largi attendance, it being estimated that there were fully 1000 people in the boathouse'and its vicinity, of whom between 600 and 700 partook of the Club hospitality. There were two whaleboat races of three crews each, and four gig races —three boats being in two races and two < m the other two races. Some' very interesting contests took place, the linishes, especially in the final, beiog very close, all the boats overlapping one another. The new building is two storeys in height, each floor being 40 by 47 feet. The olub now own 11 boats, but there is room in tho boat-house for as many more.
