Adelaide.— the body of quartz was met with at the low level on Monday last, the, crosscut has been extended a further distance of seven feet, which makes a total distance of 24 feet from the shaft. The country that is now being passed through is a nice clean class of sandstone, and two or three small quartz reins have been met with. As eoon as the-crosscut has been extended a few feet further ahead, the manager proposes opening out upon the reef already intersected, and to drive upon it in both directions. Its average width where cut through is about 6 inches, and it is composed of a most kindly class of quartz with favourable minerals disseminated through it. Colours of gold were seen freely in the quartz broken from it, and judging from its appearance generally, it should prove a remunerative body when it is opened up. May Qokkm Extended.—The following tenders have been received fur the driving of a crosscut in this company's mine ;— Holt and party, 19s 6:1 per foot; Boyle and party, 18s 6d ; Moody and party, 17s; Vercoeand party, 15a lid; Bradfieid and. party, 15s 6d; Gallagher and party, 14s 9d; Sawyer and party, 14s 6d ? McCaskill and party, 14s; Wilson and party, 12s (accepted).. This crosscut,, which ' has already been commenced by the company, will penetrate a section of country in the footwall side of the old Hokianga or Hague Smith's cross lode, and it will intersect several reefs prior to their junction with the large lode mentioned. Already a body of quartz nine inches in thickness, and carrying nice mineral indications, has been intersected, but no gold has been seen in ic so far. Thames-Hauraki. — The contractors in the Queen of Beauty shaft have now reached a depth of about 50ft below the chamber recently out out for the reception of the plungers that will be used in connection with the new pumping machinery, which leaves them about 25ft further to proceed with the shaft enlargement boforo reaching down to the water level. This will take them about another fortnight to complete, and after it is accomplished it is probable Mr. Dunlop will at once put on a staff of miners to crosscut at No. 5 level, which level was passed during the past week by the contractors in the shaft—for the purpose of intersecting what is known as No. 1 reef, which is believed to be intact at the level in question, and from which it is anticipated payable results will be obtained. At the Deep Sinker section, the new new pumping and winding machinery is now in full working condition, and everything is in readiness for resuming the sinking of the new shaft. Mr. Dunlop, however, is experiencing considerable difficulty in obtaining a staff of competent miners to work in the shaft, but he is in hopes of having a sufficient number engaged so as to commence operations on Monday. Excollont progress has been made with tho extension of the surface crosscut in the Deep Levels Consolidated section this week. "A total distance of about 130 feet has now been accomplished. The country passed through during the last few days has been of a hematite character, but this is now apparently giving place to a white sandstone. So far no water has been met with, the country being exceedingly free ot moisture. THAMES WARDEN'S OFFICE. Thames, Saturday. During the past week 10 applications were lodged at the local Warden's Office for 10 special claims, 1 machiue site, and 1 waterrieht, and the total sum of money lodged on behalf of the same wae £307 Is Id, which is an increase of £5 8s 9:1 upon the amount deposited during the previous week. The total number of applications received during the month of October is as follows:—Fiftyseven special claims, 10 licensed holdings, 1 prospecting area, 10 water rights, and 3 machine sites, whilst the total sum of money deposited on behalf of the same amounted to £2003 ossd. MINE MANAGER'S REPORTS. HiNTON (Coromandel, October 30.)— Have driven further distance of three feet into No. 1 reef, making a total of nine feet, no appearance of hanging wall yet. Leader close to Southern Star boundary looking well. Golden Caledonia (Coromandel, October 29).— drive is now in 62 feet ; we are in sott blue granite country with greasy backs. Think one of the leads will soon show up and in this kind of country there is hardly a doubt of it carrying gold. On the eastern portion of the property have discovered a new lead about eight inches, it gives gold in the dish. Belmont (Waitekauri, October 24).—The Komata. reef looks better, and is more solid, carrying three feet of quartz in the drive. The country seems to be improving. Sterling (Karangahake, October 27).— Drive going south, on the hanging-wall of large reef; the reef has been slightly disturbed during the week on account of a small break crossing .the lode. The country is much fiofter than it has been for some time past and of a more favourable nature for gold. In the low level; the country continues of a hard blocky nature.' Out a strong flow of water in the face of the drive. Moanatairi.North • (Thames).-Driving on main reef at low level; reef broken down up to the face for ten or twelve feet back from the face the ' reel has been pinched small, but has now. widened out to fully one foot in width, and at present looks very promising, being heavily charged with goon minerals, and has every appearance of improving ahead. Are now almost directly underneath where the rich crushing dirt was obtained in the upper level, and from now the reel should improve as the drive is extended. Darwin '(Thames).—Monarch level ; the reef maintains its average size, and looks' very promising. In breaking down on Monday gold was seen freely distributed throughout the quartz in the leading and second slopes. In the No. 1 level two men are employed in sinking through to the Multon level, the country being penetrated through is of a splendid class of sandstone country. Am confident this winze will open up a splendid block of ground. Monarch of All (Kuaotunu).—Have had the men employed at the new low level. When cutting the face for the tunnel we intersected a small leader, which gave good prospects. Waitekauri - Kathleen (Waitekauri, October 31).— driven a distance ot 40 feet, and are now in a firm sandstone, which is getting harder as we proceed. Nonpareil (Thames, October 29).—Have just intersected the old drive put in on McOurdv'B leader five feet west of the face. The leader is very much pinched up, not being more than three inches thick. It shows some favourable mineral, but could see no gold. I have started the men to drive east, or up hill on it. Progress-Castle .Kock _ (Coromandel, October 29).T-The stope going north has been somewhat broken up, and in consequence I have not seen any gold for the past few days. • The stope going south : The reef here looks well, being tally three feet wide, bat no picked stone to hand. No. 3 level: Reef still maintains its size, four feet between walls. __ j>i , SOUTHERN RETURNS. [BY TELKqWh.--PRBSB ASSOCIATION.] Grevmooth, Sunday.
