On the starter dispatching the field the favourite took up the running with Resolute, and then oame Bundook, Eleusinian, The Officer, and Sabretache, while Charge was whipping in. By the time the riverside was reached Nowhaven had drawn three lengths to the front and was going very strongly, there being little change in tin relative position of the others, except that Eleusinian had run up into third position. Resolute, Coil, and Charge at this stage were almost the tail of the field. Along the back stretch the favourite increased his lead, and racing by the training ground had six lengths' advantage from Resolute, who was being ridden to keep his position. Then followed Coil and The Officer, racing together, while the rear division comprised Eleusinian, Charge, Sabretache, and Bundook. There was very little change to the home turn, but here Newhaven drew away from his opponents in tho easiest possible manuor, and won in a canter by half-a-dozen lengths, Coil being half a length behind Resolute, The Officer fourth, Eleusinian fifth, Charge sixth, Bunseventh, and Sabretaohe last. The- runaway victory achieved by Newhaven in the V.R;C. Derby furnishes plenty of cvidenoe that he is every bit as good as he was voted to be after, he dressed down his opponents in /the Spring Stakes and Craven Plateat Randwiok in September last; and his win in the blue riband would also seem to prove beyond n vestige of doubt that.when he had to strike his colours to The Officer in the Caiilfifld Guineas a fortnight back, the latter bad the good luck to catch the son of Newminster a ! little below, himself. '■•= Newhaven was got by Newminster from Oceania, who in turn was -got by St./Albans from Idalia, she latter being by Tim hi flier from Musidora (dam of Briseis, who.won the V.R.C, •Derby; and Melbourne Cup in 1876). \<y Newhaven was bred by Mr. W, R. Wilson, and at the sale of yearlings : hold '. at: St. Albans in March, last year, ho was ptirohased on behalf of Mr. Jss. Wilson for the ; moderate sum of

120 guinea.?. • Ju'fti prior to the opening of the Australian Jockey Club's Autumn Meeting in April last, Messrs. W. T. Jones ami W. 0. Cooper made an offer of 2000 guineas for the colt, and this being accepted by Mr. Wilson, he'has}; since < raced in the joint interest of - Messrs. ;*Jones, and !.; Cooper. Both Newhaven's owners are at present abseuc in England, so'that Neither; were present at .FlemingM to seethe colt achieve his brilliant , victory 'in ,the' Derby, i Newhaven's victory would be the reverse of 'acceptable to the. members of • the ring, for with the exception of a slight interval he has all through been a strong favourite for the blue riband.' ';>,■■-■ . ' .•>'.. ' .':£■:*■• Newhaven is engaged in the. Melbourne Cup, to be run tomorrow, and though he has a weight (7«t 131b) that has brought every three-year-old up to the present into trouble in the great Flqmington race, the moderate character of the opposition on this occasion may enable him to put up a record. , ' .
