Gillies' settlement as minister. An illuminated address was presented tc Mr. Gillies, and a purse of sovereigns for Mrs. Gillies.

A very pleasing ceremony was performed at the Auckland University on May 7 ( when Professor Oxford, who has been conducting the Latin classes daring the past term in the absence of Professor Tubbs, was presented by Mr. F. J. Ohleon, on behalf of his brother students, with a handsome silver-mounted meerschaum pipe. Mr, F. H. Bakewoll, whose name appears in the list of those upon whom he degree of M.A. had been conferred by the University of New Zealand, is the second son of Dr. R. H. Bakewell, of this city. Mr. Bakewell has been for several years employed as a teacher under the Wellington Education Board.

On April 20 the employees of Messrs. T. and S. Morrin and Co. presented to their traveller, Mr. H. A very pleasing ceremony (says our Hamilton correspondent) took place on April 27, when the staff of the Waikato Times presented the proprietor, Mr. George Edgecumbe, with f, handsome silver cake tray and address, signed by some fourteen of the employees. The occasion was the silver wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Edgecumbe. Mr. P. G. The weather was beautiful and there was a very larg< attendance of nearly 300 invited guests, while the arrangements for the reception were admirably carried out. Amongst the gnests were Bis Excellency the Governor, Lady Glasgow, Ladies Augusta and Dorothy, and Lady Helen Boyle, Majoi Elliot, private secretary to His Excellenoy, Mr. J.' J. Holland, Mayor of Auckland, The Right Rev. Bishop Wallis, of Wellington, and Captain Castles, H.M.S. Pylades, , A very pleasing function in connection with the departure of Mr. J. F. Logan, of the 'irm of Macky, Logan, Steen and Co., who leaves for England on a» extended business trip, was held at the Metropolitan Hotel on May 7th, when a large and representative gathering of athletes attended to wish that gentleman "God speed " on his journey, and witness the presentation to him of an album in token of the esteem in which he is held by all true lovers of outdoor pursuits in this centre. A very pleasant smoke concert was held in Mr. H. A. Grattau's Masonic Hotel, Devonport, on May 8, by the North Shore Cricket and Amr.:eur Athletic Clubs, as a farewell to Mr. Logan. During the evening the Mayor (Mr. Malcolm Niccol), who presided, made a presentation to Mr. Logan, which took the form of a beautiful walkingstick, made of puriri, and mounted with chased gold from the Tararu mine, with a band of the same metal bearing the engraving, " Presented to Mr. J. F. Logan by tha M.S. Cricket and Athletic Clubs. Me to ratou aroha.'" The Maori words signifying, "with-the greatest esteem and affection."

Mr. Jaß. Park, P.G.S,, late director of the Thames School of Mines, but who has resigned that position in order to take up ah appointment in the service of the AngloGontinental Gold Syndicate, was on May 7 the recipient of a very handsome souvenir from the old and present students of the School,: and also a highly complimentary certificate from the Council of the School. There was a very large gathering ot old and present students, and the President (Mr. James McGowan, M.H.R.) presided, and made the presentations, which, took the form of a very handsome .gold watch from the old students and a beautiful gold Albert chain with quartz pendant' from the present! sti'dente. In tasking, 'she presentation Mr. McGowan highly eulogised the services of Mr, Park during his long term as director, and said that he not only considered the Thames >. community had suffered a loss in the severance of that gentleman's connection with the school, but that it was also a colonial loss.
