CHINESE UNEMPLOYED. Mr. Sbddon told his hearers at Johnsonville last night, that there were 152 Chinese fruit and grocery shops in Wellington, and that 20 Chinese had registered themselves as unemployed.

THE GOVERNMENT PRINTER. There is, of course, much ingenuity exorcised to discover the motivo of Mr. Costall's retirement in the face of an acquittal of the charges against him. One of the rumours afloat is that certain members of the Typographical Union will not accopt the finding of the Commission. The general belief is that there is considerable difference of opinion in the " ohapel," and the consequences may be more far-reaching than is anticipated. The whole affair is pronounced by all persons connected with the trade as very unsatisfactory.

NATIVE MEETING. Captain Russell, Mr, Buchanan, and Hone Hoko held a meeting of natives and Europeans at Papawoi yesterday, The notable chief Mahupuku hai leffc for Wellington the previous day. Hone Hoke addressed the natives. There wore about 100 Europeans present. The members of the Opposition rocoived a cordial greeting from both natives and Europeans.

PREMIER'?! BIRTHDAY. A movement is on foot here to celebrate the Premier's birthday on the 22nd of Juno noxt with a public ceremonial.

PROHIBITION LEAGUE.

The Rev. Mr. Isitt is to liaro a public welcome on his arrival from England about the 24th prox. It is intended to recommend the league at its meeting on Friday next to fall In line with the decisions of tho Otago and Canterbury Conventions with regard to the local option poll, that is to vote for prohibition and reduction.

THE FRUIT CONFERENCE. I understand the report of the Fruit Conference will be published as a Parliamentary paper. It is full of the most valuable, scientific, and practical information upon fruitgrowing. I am told that the demand for copies is vory great. Application for copies should be made early to the Department of Agriculture.
