London, May 11. The Australian cricketers began their opening mateh of the tour at Sheffield Park today, when they were opposed by an eleven chosen |>y Lord She (Held. There waa splendid weather and a large attendant, including the Prince of ales, to whom H. Trott, captain of the visitors, was presented. The wicket was not of the best, befog rather lively. , ■■ Trott won the toss and decided to bat. Dommn and Darling were the first to go to the wickets, opposed to the bowling of Pougher and Mold. Each batsman played with confidence, and scored freely. Darling gave the spectators a brilliant display oi cutting and hard clean driving, but gave a hard return to Pougher ear ly in the. innings, but was not accepted. With 3* on • the board Jackson relieved Pougher.
