The Northern Company's steamer Waiotahi arrived from Opotiki and Tauranga yesterday, and leaves for the same place again at 5 p.m. tomorrow. On Saturday night the Northern Company's steamer Ion;i arrived from Tairua, Mercury Bay, and Kuaotmiu. She leaves for Whangarei at 7 p.m. to-morrow. The steamer Nguuguru arrived from Whangarei yesterday. On Saturday the Northern Company's steamer Douglas arrived from Whangarei with a cargo of coal, and leaves for the same place again this evening. The hrigantinc Defiance sailed for the Kaipara on Saturday afternoon to load timber tor Sydney. On Saturday the American barquentine R. A. C. Smith was cleared at the Customs for New York, and hauled out into the stream. She will sail to-day. The Northern Company's steamer Clanßtnan leaves for Russell, Wiiangaroa, and Mangonui this evening. This afternoon the barquentine Acacia will tow down to the Thames to load timber at Bagnall's Mill for Melbourne. The Union Company's steamer Pukaki urived at Westport from Auckland on Saturday night, and returns with a cargo of coal, Jeing due on Thursday next. . Yesterday Messrs. Mitohelson Brothers' schooner Hula sailed from Lyttelton for the Kaipara. The Northern Company's new steamer Waimurie is proving horaelf a very popular boat in the Upper Thames trade. She is maintaining a very good average rate of speed, the smartest run being from Paeroa to Auckland in eight hours. The brlgantine Stanley has arrived at Melbourne from the Thames with a cargo of timber. , * On Saturday the steamer Banffshire Jeft the Bluff for London. During the passage of the scow Pirate from Newcastle to Gisborno, which occupied 15 days, a heavy westerly gale, accompanied with a violent sea, was met with, which necessitated tho putting out of oil-bags over the bows, which had the result of making the running much easier. The vessel made the run to the North Cape in 7 days 14 hours, but was much delayed from there to Gisborne by haying ,° beat against a strong sou'-easter, followed by a fiat calm for a day. The American barque Charles G. Rice is expected to sail from Wellington for this port on Wednesday. r On Saturday morning tho Huddart-Parker steamer Tasmania arrived at Sydney from this port. THE PAHA. On Saturday the new steamer Fania, which has been built by Mr. W. Holmes, of the North Shore, for the Wairoa-Hawko's Bay trade, had a preliminary trial of her engines, when everything was found to work smoothly and well. The engines have been fitted up by Messrs. Dunn, Smith, and Co, To-day the steamer will undergo An offiolal trial trip, and it everything is found in order will probably leave for Napier on Wednesday,

TRIAL TRIP OP H.M.S. PENGUIN. H.M.B. Peuguin, which was recently recommissioned, made a trial of her engines at Sydney, in preparation for her departure on a surveying cruise. She loft her moorings at 10 o'clock, and on going outside had a three hours' spin, .during whioh she averaged 10 knots per hour. Her work will consist of surveys and soundings among the Ellice Islands, and advantage will be taken of the opportunity to convey a party of scientists to tht soone of their researches among the coral islands. The Penguin will remain at the Islands till the advent of the hurricane season iu November, and then return to Sydney.

THE JAPAN MAIL SERVICE. • The Japan Mail Company (Nippon Yuaen Kaisha) intend shortly to run a line of firstclass steamers between the East ami the Australian colonies. The company are also desirous of obtaining a share of the carrying trade to other parts of the world, and with this object iu view the directors have given some important orders to British shipbuilders. Six additional twin-screw steamers, it is said, will be required. One of these is being built in Japan by tho Mitsu Rishi Company, and orders for the other five have been placed with shipbuilding firms in Great Britain. Each of the new vessels will be 450 feet in length, and of 5550 tons, the carrying capaoity being 7500 tons dead weight, and tho average speed 12 knots. Orders for four of the vessels have gone to Clyde builders— 1 two to Messrs. D. and W, Henderson, of Partiok. and two to Messrs. Napier, Shanks, and Bell, of Yokor—while it is said Messrs. Harlandand Wolff, of Belfast, will build four similar vessels, but the trade for which they are iutended has not been, indicated.
