PRESENTATION TO MR. J. F. LOGAN.

A very phasing function in connection with the departure of Mr. J. F. Logan, of the firm of Mucky, Logan, Steen and Co., who leaves for England to-morrow on an extended, business trip, was held ftb the Metropolitan Hotel last night, when a large and representative gathering of athletes attended to wish that gentleman "God speed "on his journey, and witness the presentation to him of an album in token of the esteem in which he is held by all true lovers of outdoor pure jits in this centre. Mr. B. J. Esam (vice-presidentand treasurer of the Metropolitan Club) presided, and was supported on the right by Mr. L, A. Cuff, ex-secretary of tho New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, while on his left sat Mr. Logan (the guest), and Messrs. Buchanan (president of the North Shore Ulub), Frank Lawry (M.H.R.), and several personal friends of Mr. Logan's. After the usual loyal toasts had boen duly honoured, Mr. Esam rose to make the presentation, which he introduced with a few suitable remarks. Noono, hesaid, whohnd been identified with Mr. Logan fail to recognise his sterling worth, and the assiduous manner in which he had devoted himself to the duties pertaining to his official capacities aa president of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club, vice-president of tho North Shore Club, and local officer of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, while cricketers would also have occasion to remember him as' a vicepresident of their Association. Mr. Burgess and Mr. Cuff also referred in most flattering terms to Mr. Logan's invaluable services. Mr. Esam then presonted the Album, which was beautifully bound in morocco, and contained tho signatures of no less than 336 athletes, including the officials of >.he Auckland and North Shore Clubs, the executive of the N.Z.A.A.A., the executive of tho Cambridge Club, and the New Zealand Cricket Council. The frontispiece comprised a very handsome illuminated address, bordered with artistic imitations of athletes participating in the several branches of outdoor pastimes, a view of the Domain orleket ground and pavilion, with a match in progress, and a view of the North Shore and Rangitoto. The address was as follows :—"Auckland, May 7, 1896. to Jas, Fowlds Logan, Esq. Dear Sir,—We cannot allow you to depart from Auckland, for probably a considerable poriod, without expressing our sincere regard and esteem towards you. As president of the Auckland Amateur Athletic Club, vice-president of the North Shore Athletic Club, local officer of tho Now Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and vice-president of the Auckland Cricket Association, you have for many years identified yourself with us and it affords us great pleasure to convoy to ycu our high appreciation of the inestimable services you haw rendered towards the development and welfare of all branches of outdoor sport, and tho able manner in whicn you havo fulfilled the responsible duties attaching to the offices mentioned. Your enthusiasm has been an admirable oxample for many of us to imitate, and by your courtesy, tact, consideration, and encouragement, our institutions have been greatly benefited. In wishing you good-bye, we ask your acceptance of this memento of our regard, which is accompanied by our best wishes for the happiness and prosperity of yourself, Mrs. Logan, and daughter.—We are, dear sir, yours faithfully. [Then followed the signatures.] Mr. Logan suitably replied, and expressed his regret at severing his ties with Auckland for a lengthened period. He concluded by stating that he proposed to offer a challenge cup to be run for as the committee may decide. During the evening a number of toasts were honoured, and several vocal items contributed, Mr. E. J. Burke accompanying on tho piano. The : izes won at tho recent athletic carnival were also distributed by Mr, Logan, who notified that the Messrs. Road Bros, would give a valuable gold modal for competition next year. The gathering terminated about 11 o'clock wish the singing of "Auld Lang Syne" and three hearty cheers for the departing guest.
