PRESENTATION TO MR. JAMES PARK, F.G.S.

[M TELEQttAPH,-OWK OOIIBKS'PQNDENT.] Thames, Thursday. Mr. Jas. Park, F.G.S,, late director of the Thames School of Mines, bub who has rosignod that position in order to take up an appointment in the service of tho AngloContinental Gold Syndicate, was to-night the recipient of a very handsome souvenir from the old and present students of the School, and also a highly complimentary certificate from tho Council of the School. There was a very large gathering ot old and presonb students, and tho President (Mr. James McGowan, M.H.R.) presided, and mado the presentations, which took the form of a very handsome gold watch from the old students and a beautiful gold Albert chain with quartz pendant from the present students. In making the presentation Mr. MoGowan highly eulogised the services of Mr. Park during his long term as director, and said that ho nob only considered the Thames community had sufforod a loss in the severance of that gentleman's connection with the school, but that it was also a colonial loss. The speaker dwelt at considerable length upon tho good results accomplished by Mr. Park and the kindly feeling that had always existed between him and the students. Mr. Park, in reply, thanked the donors most heartily for thoir very handsome and valuable present, and said tbey would ever romind him of tho pleasant associations ho had made during his residence at the Thames. The watch bore the following inscription .-—"Presented to James Park, Esq., P.G.S., by his old students on the occasion of his eevoring his connection as director of the Thames School of Mines, in appreciation of his zealous and untiring efforts at all times to further their advancement. Thames, May 7, 1896 j" whilst tho pendant bore tho following : "Presented to Jamos Park, Esq-., F.G.S , by the students of the Thames School of Minos, as a mark of estoem. Thames, May 7th, 1896." The certificate presented by the Council bore a resolution heartily thanking Mr. Park for tho able and zealous manner in which he had always carried out the various duties ot dirootor. of the School, and concluded by stating that tho Council desired, whilst expressing their regret at the loss the institution would suffer through his resignation of the directorship, to congratulate him on attaining a superior and more lucrative position, and wished him every pebble success in his new sphere of action.
