The Hon. J. G.' Ward left Lyttelton for Wellington yesterday. Mr. .1. A. Millar, M.H.R. for Port Chalmers, is on a visit to the West Coast at present. News has been received at Hobart of the death of Mr. Conrad Jensen, for many years chief officer of the well-known colonial barque Kassa. Mr. and Mrs. Caulton, of Hastings, Hawke's Bay, who have boen on a short visit to Auckland, left for Napier yosterday by the Burrumbeet. The Auckland Young Ladies' Orchestra will rename, their rehearsals this month, and Miss Thorpe will act as conductor in the place of Mies Reeve. Mr. O. Gillon, son of tho late Mr. E. T. Gillon, has beon transferred as purser from the Omapere to the Taieri, now running between Sydney and Launceston. Captain Wa'.lington has resignedjlis post as Private Secretary to Lord Brassey. The Hon. Randolph Capol, brother of Lady Brassey, succeeds to the position. Mr. I*. A. Philip?, the Town Clerk, is making a good recovery at " Puriri," Symonds-street. Ho anticipates being able to resume his official duties next week.
Captain W. J. Reid, formerly cf the ship Star of Russia, is now in command of the Tyser Company's steamer Star of England, due next week at this port from Loudon and Australian ports. Mr. Boyd, fleet engineer, R.N., left for Whangarei yesterday, for the purpose of visiting the great Waitungi colliery. He intends staying for a few weeks to superintend boring operations. Mr. J. W. Mcßrearty, son of Dr. Me Brearty, of Greymouth, has passed his final examination at the College of Surgeons, Edinburgh, and has sailed for New Zealand by the s.s, Tongariro. Mr. 11. Ferguson, Inspector of the Government Labour Bureau, resumed his duties yestorday, after a visit to tho South. Mr. Shnnaghan, who has been temporarily in charge, returned to Wellington yester-
day. News has been received in Auckland that our popular pianists, Mis* Emily Hoove, has arrived safely in Germany, and, after parsing through the usual examination for admis'ion at tho Conservatoire, was placed in the highest pianoforte class of tho institution.
A man named Aaron Hayman died nt Eaglchawk (Victoria) last week from typhoid fever. He was one of the shipwrecked crow of General Grant on Auckland Island thirty yuan ago, Tw» of tho other survivors, Mr. and Mrs. Jewell, took part in the Eastern Fair procession at Bendigo in tho clothing of animals' Hkins, which was worn by them on the island. Mr. Watson, President of the Bank of New Zealand, Mr. T L. Murray, manager of the Auckland branch, and Mr. Hume, manager ot tho Hamilton hranch, arrived at I'aeroa last night. The party, who are accompanied by Mrs, Watson and Mrs. Stewart, wife of Mr. Stowarfc, solicitor, purpose visiting Karangahake and Waihi, after which thoy proceed back to Auckland, via the Thame".
Our Waipu correspondent writes Quito a pretty wedding came off in the church on the 27th April, the contracting parties being Mr. A. M. McAuloy and Miss Florence McKay, second daughter of the lato Mr. Roderick McKay, of Auckland, The ceremony was performed with duo solemnity by the Rev. G. Jones. The bride was tastefully dressed in a cream-coloured dress, and was attended by two maids, viz., Miss Nora McKay and Miss Mary McAuloy, both clad in dresses of beautiful sea green, The bridegroom was attended by Mr. Roderick McKay, the bride's brother. Tbo church was tastefully decorated with flowers, and at the conclusion of the ceremony tho wedding march was played by Miss Annie McLean on tho harmonium in honour of the occasion.
