[tX TELEGRAPH— CORRESPONDENT. 1 Thames, Tuesday. At a meeting of the local Harbour Board to-night, the General Purposes Committee reported that Mr. C. A. Harris, of Auckland, had held a conference with them on the 28th ult., at which ho proposed, in order to improro the wharfage accommodation, the erection of a wharf ab Tararu, and connecting the same with the township by a railway. To enable this work being done, ho offered to lend the Board a sum of £25,000 for a period of '21 years, at 5 per cent., the debentures not to exceed 95. The suggestion and offer of Mr. Harris evoked considerable discussion, but the general opinion was, that the scheme was not such a one as tho Board could recommend, whilst the terms of the proposed loan were not of a favourable character. Eventually it was decided nob to accept Mr. Harris' offer, and instead, the following motion, proposed by Mr. Potts, and seconded by Mr. Oillespio, was carried : "Thab a bonus of £50 be offered for the best competitive schemo and estimates for providing efficient wharfage accommodation between Kaaaetanga and Tararu, the cost of same not to exceed £12,000." It was also agreed that the competition should be open to anyone who chose to compote, including the Board's own harbourmaster, i if be desired to do so.
