LAW AND POLICE.
POLICE COURT.—MONDAY. [Before Mr. H. W. Nortlscroft, S.M.I Drunkenness.—Kate Hincii pleaded guilty to her fourth offence, and a sentence of two mouth's imprisonment with hard labour wat imposed. Theft.-James Holmes was sent to gaol for 14 days for having stolen an umbrella, the property of James Wright, and o,i a charge of drunkenness previously heard a liue of 5s was inflicted, with tho option of 48 hours. Assault.—A young man named George Thompson, alias Leicester, pleaded guilty to an assault on James Alexander Campbell on April 17, and he was also charged with having assaulted, on the same occasion, Sarah Samways, to which lie pleaded not guilty. From the evidence it appeared that the accused was ill-using the woman Sam ways in NelsonStreet, when Campbell and another witness named Matthews interposed. Accused made off, and was arrested in Victoria-street by Constable Keep, and after some trouble lodged in the lock-up. His Worship commented on the cowardly act it was to strike a woman under any circumstances, and commended the witnesses who interfered in the row to prevent further injury to the woman. A sentence of one month was imposed each case, sentences to run concurrently. Stowaways. — Three young fellows named respectively James Anderson, Joseph Marsden, and Robert Moles were charged witji having travelled on the s.s. Anglian from Napier to Auckland, between April 17 and 19, without having previously paid the fare, and with intent to avoid payment. In answer to the Bench as to their reason for stowing' away, two of the accused said there was no work to be got in Hawke's Bay, and the third said his swag was put on board by a friend, and being unable- to regain it he (accused) thought it better to go with it as it contained all his worldly goods. Each accused was fined 40?, with the alternative of 14 days' imprisonment.
