BOROUGH COUNCILS.

NEWMARKET. The ordinary meeting of the above Council wan held in the Council Chambers last night, there being present: Mr. J. M. Laxon (Mayor), in the chair, and Messrs. Whyman, Spooner. Lee, Edgerley, Laurie, Lowe, Lumpkin, McColl, and Page. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Weighbridge.—'The town clerk notified that no reply had been received from Messrs. Grainger and Clayton re repairing or remoral of their weighbridge in the borough, which under existing circumstances it dangerous to the public traffic. It was decided that a further week's notice be given the owners, when, if not repaired or removed, the Council will have it removed at the owners' expense. Footbridge.—A letter was received from tho railway authorities stating that) the proposed footbridge asked for by the Council, when certain approaches to the same had been completed, was under consideration, and that the Council would be notified of their intentions shortly. Repairs to Footpath,—Mrs. Warnock drew the attention of the Council to necessary repairs to footpath outside her premiss* at the corner of Kyber Pass and Symonds street; also that she be permitted to erect a verandah to her shop, the posts to stand 12 inches inside the kerb. The question of repairs was referred to the Streets Committee, and that re verandah granted, with the stipulation that the posts be on a level with the kerb. Mr. F. Towser also wrote complaining of the state of New-market-street, and the Council decided, to reply that the necessary repairs were receiving consideration and would be proceeded with at the earliest possible opportunity. Electric Tramways.—Mr. Jas. Stewart, C.E., wrote asking the Council to grant authority on their behalf to Mr. T. F. Martin, city solicitor, Wellington, to approve certain alterations and amendments to the Order-in-Council, re electric tramways, as suggested by tho Public Works Department in the interests of public safety, such authority to be forwarded immediately to Wellington. Ib was resolved that tho matter be deferred until the next meeting of the Council.

Bkunnerton Rembf Fund.—A communication was received, asking that subscription lists be opened in aid of tho Brunnerton Disaster Fund. Ib was decided to open lifts as requested. Ib was further mentioned tliab a concerb was being promoted in the Borough, under the auspices of the Fire Brigade, in aid of fclm fund. The concert will be held on the 22nd of Way. Fire Brigadk.—Certain repairs to apparel and working material asked for by the local Fire Brigade were granted. Ib was alflo decided, on the motion of Mr. SieUaul, that the Council make a presentation, ab the annual inspection of the Brigade, to the best-dressed fireman, such recognition to 'be paid for by the councillors personally. Typhoid Fkver.— The Mayor drew the attention of tho?e present) to the faco that the rumour that a-case of typhoid fever had been discovered in the Borough was incorrect, tho supposed sufferer's complaint) boiiifj pneumonia. He pointed out that not a single case of fevar had occurred in the district during the season, and that tho Borough had never been in such a healthy condition as at present. Registration of DocS.—The Town Clerk (Mr. Hogg) was appointed Registrar of Dogs for the Borough of Newmarket, at. the ?ame remuneration paid to tho previous Registrar. Council Meetings.—On tho motion of Air. Wyman, it was decided that during the winter months all meetings of the Council shall commence at 7.30 p.m., instead of 8 o'clock, as heretofore. ONEHUINUA. The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Onehunga Borough Council was held last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (Mr. 1). A. Sutherland), Messrs. Jackson, College, Nixon, McKenzie, Burden, Hill, Patten, Hutchison, and Laking.

Finance.—The treasurer read his usual statemont as follows:—General account: Balance to credit March 31, £27 Gs 6d ; deposited since, £61 2?: total, £88 8s Cdj cheques drawn since, £25 13s; balance to credit April 26, £6215s 6d. Waterworks account: On fixed deposit in National Bank, £400; balance, dr., March 3!. £40 10a 10J ; cheques drawn since, £32 13s; deposited since, £53 fa 6d; balance, dr., April 20, £•20 03 4d. Recreation ground and trusb account: Balance to credit March 31, £86; deposited since, £6 10s: total, £92 10s. Contractors' deposit account: Balance in bank March 31, £33. Domain account: Balance in bank March 31, £6 15s; cheques drawn since, 15s: total, £6. Due to Borough Council, £115 11s 91 Electric Tuamways.— A letter was roceived from Mr. James Stewart, re electric tramways, The Council decided to refer the letter to Messrs. Ruseell and Campboll, borough solicitors, for advice. Water fob Manoere.—A letter was re ceired from tho Mangere Domain Board,accepting the offer of the Onehunga Borough Council to supply them with water ab 10d per 1000 gallons, minimum quantity 20,000 gallons per quarter, and stating that the Board had ordered the pipes. Petitions.—Re petition from 35 ratepayers and residents of Capt&in.gtreefc, requesting the Council to erect two gas lamps in Captain-street. The Council agroed to pay for tho supply of gas, if the petitioners will provido the lamps. New Pumping Station*.—Re application from Newmarket Borough Council for a site whereon to erocb a pumping station, tha Council decided to ask the applicant! for further information as to which site is required. Health Officer's Report.—Dr. Scott, health officer, roported two &..aes of infectious disease within the Borough. It was pointed out that one of these ensoj was that of the late Mr. Pemberton, who came to Onehunga to consult Dr. Scott, p,nd was immediately ordered by him to bed »t Onehunga. New Cemetkry.—Mr. Jackson moved, " That the Council go into committeo immediately after the aajoanraeiit of Mie present meeting, to consider the question of providing a cemetery for the Borough of Onehnnga." The motion was adopted. After several other matters had been dealt with, the Council vent into Committee.
