AUSTRALIAN COMMERCIAL NOTES. Press Association.—Klectrie Telegraph.—Copyright. Sydney, April '20. The hopeful tone which marked the openingof the mouth in import circles proved wellfounded. Increased activity noted last week was not only maintained, but the volume of business showed further signs of expansion, Sugar is very firm. Tea shows an improving tendency. A large quantity of Californiau wheat and flour is offering at- low figures. To date 1,503,000 bushels wlieat have been imported into the colony, and '10,000 bushels are afloat from American sources. Allowing for the latter tli>;re remains an estimated shortage of 2,410,000 bushels to be made up by importation. Millers arc well stocked, but as there are no new fixtures of CVlifornian wheat it is probable that as stocks become depleted they will be compelled to draw more freely on local sources. The Herald, commenting on tiie position, says New Zealand, the nearest source of supply, could not find a better market than Sydney, even if prices fell considerably below the price now ruling. New Zealand supplies of onions are exhausted.

Melbourne, April 20. Moderate business was done in the import market, confined mainly to meeting immediate requirements of trade. Good rains in a great part of the colony have much improved the agricultural outlook. Breadstuffs are dull and declining, wheat 5Jd to s|d._ Bran and pollard are very firm. Oats are in good demand. Other lines are steady.

AUSTRALIAN INVESTMENT MARKET. Sydney, April 20. After steady business throughout the week investments both in Sydney and Melbourne came into active demand. New Zealand Insurance were quoted Is higher on the Sydney Exchange. Mining was healthy; KapaiVermont, sellers ( Js, buyers 7s 9d.

Melbourne, April 20. The half-yearly statement of Madame Berry and Berry Consols mines shows that these two companies together produced 1 ton l'Jcwt 2qrs gold, valued at i' 2,191,000, the Consols' share being £599, Over 53 per cent, of gold was returned to shareholders in the shape of dividends. The Consols Company paid dividends of £12 ss, and Madame, which ceased actual work, paid a monthly dividend without intermission for 15 years.
