Ellington, Friday. The charge against Ellison, a solicitor, of being concerned in an illegal operation, was resumed to-day. At the conolusion of the evidence, Mr. Gray, who appeared for the Crown, applied for a remand until the application by Grown, sentenced at the late fittings of the Supreme Court, for a new trial was decided. Mr. Skerrett, for the accused, strongly objected, as he contended that no prima facie case had been made out against Ellison. Mr. Martin, S.M., said he would grant the remand, and the ease was adjourned for a week, The resolution passed at a public meeting held in Auckland on Tuesday last, expressive of patriotic satisfaction at the attitude of tlio imperial Government in respect to the Venezuelan difficulty and the Transvaal trouble, has been forwarded by the Premier to the Governor, in order that he may cable it to the Secretary of State for the colonies,

During the last few days the Premier has had under consideration a new scale of pay for the police force, permanent artillery, and torpedo corps. Drafts have been approved, and will be submitted bo Cabinet at next meeting. Mr, Hales, Engineer-in-Chief, and Capt. Allman, nautical adviser to the Government, left in the Hinemoa last night for the Snares to survey the site of the proposed lighthouse. Dunedin, Friday.
