' The want of a decent public hall is made very apparent at the present time. The building which now does duty for such is cheerless and most uninviting. There has been talk here for some time past of a company being formed to build such an edifice but difference in opinion in the matter of position-old town versus new—has kept the matter m abeyance. While the residents hesitate some outsider will probably step in and seize the opportunity. It is reported that the old chief of the Rangiwewei, Wi Mnihi to Rangikaheke. is lying at the point of death at Awa hou, a settlement near here. Wi Maihi acted as sub editor of Sir George Grey's work on Polynesian mythology, and is aged about 80 years. His only son was killed in one of ■It 16 .... Kooti raids on Omaromuku, near Opotlkl. . The largest trout (bo called, for the question is still an open one) yet caught here was on view yesterday, at Lake House. It weighed 17?lb, measured 2 feet 8 iuches in length, girth 26 inches. The geyser action in the hot pools at the back of tne Kuirau still continues, and is a. ' source of interest to visitors. The largest pool, which had been very quiet for a day or two suddenly burst into action the other I morning acd sent up a columu of water ami mud to a height of about 20 feet. This action has continued spasmodically ever since, but chiefly during the night. No analysis has recently been made of the waters of these pools, but they are apparently like the Kuerau itself, alkaline. ! The Rotorua-le Teko Road is again being energetically pushed ahead, about 2Q Euro. peans being engaged upon it and about the same number of natives. , f Very satisfactory nominations are expected for the forthcoming race meeting. ' There /: being no auctioneer here the gates and booths I were disposed of by tender. Mr. Clark secured the former for £21 and Mr. Reeves the latter for £11 lis. n v "„. s . x - • ■
