POLICE COURT.—Mohdat. [Before Mr. H. W. Northcroft, S.M.I Drunkenness.—Walter Harper, charged on remand with having been drunk and disorderly at Howick on Friday last, was fined 20s with costs 7s, or in default 14 days' hard labour. A second charge of having used obscene language on the same occasion was adjourned till February 17, to see how the accused would behave. Hugh Moreland, charged with having been druuk and disorderly in Ponsonby Road, was fined 20s, with the alternative of seven days' imprisonment.

Allegkd Theft. — Bertram Thomas Turner, alias Robin, was remanded till the 28th instant, on a charge of having obtained, on December 14, from one William j Henry Bleasel, at Pukekohe, the sum of £4 12s by false representations. Frank Cochrane and Robert Collier were remanded till the 27th instant on a charge of stealing one pair of boots, of the value of lis 6d, the property of William White, as they were only arrested in the morning. Negligent Driving. — James McQuoid was fined 20s with costs 7s, for having been drunk while in charge of a horse and cart in Mauukau Road, on January 11. He was also fined a like sum with 23s costs for having driven negligently on the same occasion. Sergeant McMahon represented the police iu the above. Waterworks By-laws.—Thomas Houlihan and his son pleaded guilty to having committed a breach of the Mount Eden Road Board by-laws by having drawn water from the supply furnished to another person. Mr. Cooper appeared for the prosecution, and said that the facts of the case were that Houlihan drew off a bath and a small tank full of water from a tap belonging to another consumer, he himself not being supplied. Defendant stated that he had asked for the water to be laid on to his house, but the Board had refused. Mr. Cooper explained that Mr. Houlihau wanted to be connected on special terms. A fine of 10s, with costs £2 4s, was imposed. Chinese Troubles.— Yoe pleaded not guilty to having assaulted one Ah Cliong, by striking him violently with his fists and kicking him in the stomach, on January 13. Mr. S. Hesketh appeared tor plaintiff, Mr. T. Cooper for the defence, and James Ah Kew acted as interpreter. Mr. Cooper wished to put iu certain letters, written in Chinese, which had, he was instructed, an important bearing on the case. Mr. Hesketh objected till the contents were known, and as a satisfactory translation could not be arrived at, the case was adjourned to allow the same to be made.

Larceny.—Wm. Donnelly pleaded guilty to having stolen one oilskin coat from Henry l'ankoe, and one oilskin suit from William Watts., Accused said lie was not sober at the time. Mr. Northcroft: I suppose drink is at the bottom of it all. Accused; That is so, your Worship. Mr. Northcroft: And it is at the bottom of most cases of this sort. The case was adjourned. DAUGAVILLE S.M. COURT. Tuesday, January 14. [Before Messrs. F. Norton and E. Mitchelson, J.P'n.l Criminal Case. — Hara Natena, alias Twini, was charged with a breach of the Police Offences Act, section 29. sub-section 1, by escaping from the Dargaville lock-up, also on the 27th November of breaking and entering a dwelling at Maropiu with intent to commit a crime; also with larceny of blankets and clothing, the property of Honi aud Hera Erimita. The prisoner ' pleaded guilty to all three charges, and was sentenced for escaping from the lock-un to one month's imprisonment with hard labour; and three months' for larceny, the sentences to run consecutively. The police withdrew the charge of breaking and enteringCivil Casks.—P. Conuelly v. J. Stnnaway, claim £1 16s 7<l. Judgment for plaintiff with costs Gs. W. Tierney v. Wm. Irwin, claim £1 14s. Judgment for plaintiff with costs 6s. K. Donovan v. J. Stanaway, claim 16s. Judgment for plaintiff with costs Gs. Mr. McLeod appeared for the plaintiffs in each case.
