VOLUNTEER INTELLIGENCE.

AUCKLAND RIFLE ASSOCIATION. The twenty-third annual meeting of the above Association took place on the Mount Eden Rifle Range, on Saturday last, under favourable circumstances as regards weather. During the first range of the Star Cup, the light was too bright and dazzling, the difficulty being to find the elevation. For the remainder of the shooting' the light was better, bub the wind, which was from the righb and variable, was a trifle troublesome, especially at the 600 yards rauge. The entries were much smallor than previous years, and this Is accounted for in a great measure by the majority of the volunteers boing unaccustomed to tho Martini-Honry.v No doubt when the whole volunteer force is armed with bhe Martini-Henry rifles, and the men have become accustomed to the weapon, there will be a considerable increase in the entries for the next Association meeting. The first match was the Star Cup, seven shots at 300 and 600 yards, and was won by Captain White, Victoria Rifles, with 54 points. The second match was the Herald Cup, 10 shots at 600 yards. Lieutenanb Cox, City Rifles, proved tho winner wibh 41 points, his soore being composed of seven bulls, one inner, and one outer, with an unaccountable miss, probably a defectivo cartridge. Wot ab all a bad performance, considering he finished seven points ahead of Petty-Offioer G. Spinloy, Ponsonby Navals, and Sergeant Doughty, "A" Babtery, who wero second and third respectively with 34 points ouch. The last match was the Aggrogate, seven shots at 500 yards, and was woo by Gunner Nutt, "A" Battery, with 32 points, four bulls and three inners. Gunner Buchanan, "A" Battery, who also made 32, took second prizo, but having a magpie in his score, was counted out by Nutb. The Grand Aggregate, being the aggregate of tho three matches, was won by Petty-Officer George Spinley with 114, Lieutenant Cox, City Rifles, being second with 113. The marking was very satisfactory, there being no disputed shots. Hon.-Lieutenanb Dormer, City Rifles, superintended the shooting. Tho kindness of the proprietors of tho Colonial Ammunition Manufacturing Company in presenting ammunition for all the matches was much appreciated by the competitors, and the committee of the Association desire to thank thorn for their generosity. The Dovonport Navals still remain in camp, at the Naval Reserve Station, North Shore, where they are undergoing a fortnight's instruction in eub-marino mining, and will remain until the ond of the weak. Although the weather was very unfavourable yostorday, the camp was visited by numbers of members of other corps, as well os civilians and lady friends, and they were hospitably entertained by Captain Parker and tho officers and members. The good order which characterised the camp, notwithstanding the unfavourable weather which prevailed during the greater portion of the week was tho subject of gouoral comment by the visitors.
