Wanqanui, Saturday, The following is the account of the play up till eleven p.m.:—Lelievro v. Mackay: This is the adjourned game. White played the English opening, and the gamo was played on irregular lines after. A good game resulted till about the 24th move. Then black gained apiece, and pressing hie opponent, compelled his resignation ou the 31st move. Considerable interest was taken in this game owing to its effect on Meldrum'a chance for the championship, as had he lost it the contest would have been very opon again. As it is only Mr. Hookham or Air. Pleasants can tie with him. Cocks v. Pleasants (Queen's gambit declined): A fairly even game. Mr. Pleasants, however, took two pawns eventually, which enabled him to score a win on the 33rd move. Lelievre v. Anderson: White opened with the English opening. The game was very even richt through, careful play being shown on both sides. It was drawn on the 54th move. Monat v. Hookham : This was a King's gambit declined. White sacrificed a rook for a bishop, by which ho gained a winning position, afterwards gaining three pawns and a rook. Mr. fiookham resigned. Maokay v. Barnes (centre counter gambit): White maintained his gambit pawn to the end, but agreed to draw on the 29th move. Pleasants v. Lolievre(Queen's gambit declined): A good game resulted up to the 27th move, when by a number of exchanges white gained an advantage, and koeping up the attack was able to declare mate in three on his 35th move. Pearce v. Hookham: Pearce offered _ the King's gambit which his opponent declined. A carefully conducted game ensued, but white lost a pawn and black eventually won by pissing a pawn to Queen. The only games that have to be played will bo finished on Monday. They are as follows : —Pleusanta v. Anderson, Hookham v. Mackay, Mouat v. Meldrum. The results so far are
