AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the Auckland City Council was held last night. There were present: 'Messrs. J. J. Holland (Mayor), Patersou, Hewson, Courtney, Stichbury, Cairns, Baume, Garrfttt, Farrell, Warren, Trenwith, Thome, Kidd, Grey, Julian, Glover, and Hcaketh.

Miscellaneous.—A letter was received from Mr. G. Laing, offering his services as caretaker of Waitakerei Reserve, and stating the remuneration required: The letter was received. It was agreed to grant the request of Mr. H. W. Brooks re water supply. A letter from Mr. A. Campbell re extension of Domain lease was referred to the Domain Board. An application from Mrs, M. A. Saunders for a reduction of rent for her Queen-street property was referred to the Fiuance Committee. A communication from Mr. W. E»dy re defective drainage was referred to the Streets Committee. Mr. J. H. Hannan wrote complaining of ft nuisance near his premises. The Mayor said neither the neighbours nor the Inspector thought there was any nuisance. The letter was received. Application from Messrs. Buddie, Button, and Co. for right of way was granted. A request i'rom Mr. Hoiman for a permit to put 011 some ornamental shingling to his roof in Franklin Road was granted, An application for permission to increase the size of the Sunday-school in | Alexandra-street was granted. Assistant Librarian.—The Mayor moved that the Council regrets the loss of Miss Walker's services as assistant' librarian, and wishes her every happiness in her new sphere of life. Tenders.—Four tenders wore received for the timber supplies. The Mayor said that there was evidently a combination in the timber trade, as all the tenders were exactly alike. Mr. Farrell thought that no tender should be accepted. He believed the Council might get cheaper timber from someone outside. The matter was eventually referred to the Streets Committee for a report. Tenders were received for ironwork from Falrweather and Creamer and from Alexander lleadley. The tender of Fairweathor and Creamer was accepted, Headlev to be granted the sharpening of tools in Karangahape Ward. iour tenders were received for tho erection of an engine shed at Kyber Pass reservoir. The engineer's estimate was £90. The tenders were: J. J. Payne, £116; W.J. Stephenson, £130; C. R. Lovett, £117 10s; C. Lavers, £141. The tender of J. J. Payne was accepted. Streets Committee.—Tho Streets Committee made the following recommendations: —Letter from Thomas E. Carter, re permit to line verandah with wood, Victoria-street: That the application be declined. Letter from T. Harrison, re permit advertising screen, Wellesley-street; That the application be declined, the proposed screen being contrary to the building regulations. Petition from ratepayers of Kyber Pass Road, re street watering : That an additional hydrant valves be placed as suggested by the engineer at a cost of £5. Petition from the ratepayers of Hamilton Road, re gully drainage: That if the petitioners pay half the cost (£2O) the Council will construct the drain at a cost of £40. Ponsouhy Ward members' report, re additional streeets to be tarred and sanded : That seven new streets be done, in terms of the engineer's report. Motion of Mr. Clover, re works in Cookstreet : That the work be dona at the estimated cost of £20 when tho ward workmen are available. Re bricks for reservoir: That the offer of Carder Brothers and Co., to supply Hunt's bricks at 46s per thousand be accepted. The report was adopted. Salaries. — The annual review of the salaries paid by the Council was introduced by the Mayor, who stated that all the officers had worked faithfully and well, and that the city of Auckland paid lower salaries, from the Mayor downwards, than any other city in New Zealand. Some discussion took place on the proposal to increase the salary of the Town Clerk from iMOO to £450 a yeur, moved by Mr. Thome. The debate upon this proposal was at times somewhat animated. The motion was rejected. The Salary of the assistant collector (Mr. E. S. Mowbray) was increased by £12 10s, equal to £162 10s per annum.
