u.v' New Zkaland Herald Office, Thursday evening, Business on the Stock Exchange during the past week has been quiet. Prices for miiiing stock of all classes continue dull, and fall slowly, there being little inclination to speculate. There is, very little doing in investment stocks. Buyers of National Bank offer £17s Gd. New Zealand Insurance have sold at £3 14s 9d and £3145; buyers offer £3 14s, sellers asking £3 14s Cd. Nationals find buyers at 18s 6d, and there are sellers of Standard at 18s 9d, and Accidents at 17s 6d. Buyers of Aucklaud Gas offer £12, and there are sellers of Thames Gas at £18s. Sellers of Northern Steam ask 5s 9d, and buyers of Taupiri Coal offer 17s 3d, and for Hikurangi Coal, 5s 3d. Waihi-Silvertons have sold from £223 6d to £2 10s, and there are buyers at £2 Bs, with sellers at £2 lis. Business has been done in Queen of Waihi at about 2s 9d. Waitekauris have sold at £4 4s and £4; Woodstocks at £1 and £1 ss, and Talismans at 9s. In Thames proper, sales of May Queen are reported at 10s, with sellers at that price; New Alburnia from 5s to Ga 3d to 5s Gd, with sellers at os 3d, buyers 4s 9d; and Moanataiaris at 5s 2d. Monowai (Waiomo) have sold at 5s 3d aud ss. In Coromandol stock there has been a large business in Bunker's Hill from 9a to 0s Od to 7s: aud Welcome Find from 5s 0d to 4s. In Kuaotunu stock Kapai-Vermonts have sold from 9s Gd to 9s ; and Waitaias from 3s Gd to 3s 4d. All the small-priced stock in each district are dull of sale. For late quotations wo refer our readers to the stock und share list published in another part of this issue. The trade position requires little comment. I except to state that demand from all quarters is strong, and during the week there has been a restoration of faith that was failing a week ago. We do not see occasion to discuss the markets which show little alteration, except iu iron and iron manufactured goods, which have advanced in sympathy with the home rise. Christmas requirements are beiug studied by the largest retail distributors, and new fruits are being ordered freely. The carry over of old season's is small.

Kerosene has slightly stiffened, through cable advice from New York that " White

Rose" has been advanced two cents per gallon, equal.to a penny English money. The arrival of the TeKoais waited for with interest, as sho brings a large parcel of seasonable goods. Tho strong line of the week is maize, in which there is a great scarcity, partly due to the shifting character of the Opotiki bar and the detention of steamers. Latest sales 3s, off wharf. In our other columns we have reviewed the

month's trade. Potatoes: The season is over, and so much depends upon condition that we are unable to make any report. Milling wheat: Considerable arrivals from the South. The English, Continental, and Australian markets have quieted down again. Chiefly on that account, and likewise owing to the advice of heavy shipments of wheat at San Francisco for Sydney and Queensland, nearly all the Australian markets have weakened. Onr own and Southern markets continue firm. Each sample of prime wheat that is offered is immediately pic'ied up at full prices. Bran is dull of sale and 5s per ton cheaper. Sharps: There are more selling. In the local produce market the prices remain unchanged. Best dairy fresh butter is Gil; second quality, sd; and third quality, 3d per lb wholesale. Eggs are 6d per dozen wholesale, and 8d per dozen retail. Messrs. Baker Bros, report the sale of lot 17, Aloalands, Mount Eden, for £100, Mr. Bennett being the purchaser; also of a cottage and allotment in Flagstaff Road, Devonport, to Mrs. K. E. Mays for £57 10s.
