PENSIONS FOR NURSES.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—-I think it would interest many, and might perhaps be the means of starting some practical. minds upon a useful track, if you would call attention to the subject of the National Pension Fund for Nurses in England, of which I find some account in the Times weekly edition, of 2nd August last. In my late report upon the affairs of the Christchurch Hospital I availed myself of the opportunity to make a suggestion upon this subject, but I might never nave thought of doing so had not the desirability of establishing a pension fund for nurses been pointed out to me by Mrs. Grace Neil, whose advice and assistance-would, I am sure, go far towards making the project a success. Any feasible scheme for effecting the purpose must, no doubt, be colonial and not provincial, but action would have to be taken in the various centres. I feel sure, sir, that if you and your contemporaries will lend your aid, by explaining how the thing is done in England, and if some of the ladies of Auckland, who have proved in so many matters their capacity for organization, will take the matter up, there will be a prompt and satisfactory response. There, can be no truer woman's work than nursing, but the modern movement which aims at the scientific and skilful performance of this work involves as an essential part of its machinery, some provision for nurses who are past active service.—l am, etc., J. Giles. Garston, Mauku, September 15,1895.
