The Union Company's steamer Poherua, Captain J. Shephard, arrived from the South early yesterday morning, with a cargo of general produce. The purser reports that the steamer left the Bluff on the 23rd instant, and calling at Timaru and Oamaru, left the latter port on the 25th, at midnight, passed Portland Island at 10.54 a.m. on the 28th, White Island on the 29fch at 8.30 p.m., and Cavier at 7.40 p.m., arriving at 3 a.m. on the 30th. Experienced fresh southerly breeze with thick weather to the 26th; thence, heavy head sea and variablo winds to the 28th; thence, light variable winds and clear weather to arrival. The Poherua leaves this evening for the Bluff, to load produce for this port, calling at Oamaru and Timaru. Last evening the Northern Co.'s steamer Wellington arrived from W hangarei, and leaves again : for the same place at halften o'clock to-night.

The schooner Queen arrived from Hokiautra yesterday. Captain Jones reports sailing at 9a.m. on Sunday, and called in at Kawerua the same day, took in a quantity of kauri gum and sailed at 2 p.m. Met with a northerly gale the same night, the wind moderating and shifting into the westward next moraine, fine weather prevailing until arrival. Cargo : 8000 feet totara timber. 133 sacks gum, 10 cases dried apples, 4 bags wool, 1 case jam. 1 spring cart, and 15 packages sundries. The Queen sails for Hokiartga again on Tuesday next. Last evening the Northern Company's steamer Argyle left for Kuaotunu, Mercury Bay, and Tairua, and returns to-morrow night. The Northern Company's steamer Douglas left for Whangarei last evening. Yesterday the barquentine Waitemata was cleared at the Customs for the Kaipara, where she loads timber for Sydney. She sails to-day. On Tuesday morning last the schooner Clansman, bound from this port to Rarotonga. was passed by the Ovalau, bowling along before a fine fair wind. The Ovalau brought up a large consignment of copra from the islands last _ night, : which will be transhipped into the ship if or- j farshire for London to-day. s The steamer Strathord, which left Lyttelton on February 7th last or London, and put into St. Vincent with the loss of her propeller, has arrived at London. At two o'clock this afternoon the Union Company's steamer Southern Cross leaves for the East Coast, Napier, and Wellington. The Northern Company's steamer Chelmsford left Tauranea last evening for this port, and should arrive this morning. Her departure for Tauranga and Whakatane has been postponed until nine o'clock tomorrow morning. On the 17th instant the Mission vessel John Williams arrived at Apia. , THE MAKAROA. The Union Company's fine steamship Mararoa, Captain H. W. H. Chattield, arrived from Southern and East Coast ports at 5 p.m. yesterday, after a fast run of 20 hours ! from Gisborne. While at Port Chalmers the : Mararoa was floated into dock for overhaul. Of the trip up Mr. A. Salvesen, the purser, who has taken Mr. Bourne's place for "the round trip, reports : —The Mararoa left the Dunedin Wharf on the 25th instant at 3.45 p.m., and called at Lyttelton on the 26th, leaving again on the 27th. Wellington was reached on the 28th, and Napier at 5.45 a.m. on the 30th. After discharging cargo and passengers she proceeded at 11 a.m. to Gisborne, arriving there at 4.50 p.m., and leaving again at 9.10 p.m. the same date. Had the East Cape abeam at 156 a.m. on the 30th, and passed the Great Mercury at 0.36, and had Tiritiri abeam at 4 p.m. yesterday, and arrived as above. Had lijht variable winds through the trip, with changeable weather. The Mararoa leaves for Sydney at 2 p.m. to-day.

THE TASMANIA. Yesterday morning the Huddart-Patker steamer Tasmania, Captain Thomas .McGee, arrived from Southern and East Coast ports with a fair number of passengers for this port ami Sydney. Mr. Carles*, the purser, reports —The Tasmania left Dunedin on the 24th instant. Lyttelton on the 23th, Wellington on the 27th, Napier on the 28th, and Gisborne at noon on the 29th, and arrived at 9.43 a.m. on the 30th. Experienced moderate variable winds and showery weather along the coast. The Tasmania left for Sydney at five o'clock last evening. THE OVALAU. At nine o'clock last night the Union Company's steamer Ovalau, Captain Normnn Beaumont, arrived from Samoa and Tonga, with a cargo of copra, fruit, etc. Mr. G. A. Hodson, to whom we are indebted for late samoan papers, reports:—The Ovalau left Auckland at 6.10 p.m. on the Bth inst., and called at Russell on the9:h. Coaled bunkers and left again at 5 p.m. the same date, arriving at Nukualofa at 1.40 p.m. on the 14th. Left again at 4 p.m. on the loth for Haapai, arriving there at S a.m. on the 16th, leaving again at 5 p.m. for Vavau, and arriving at 8 a.m. on the 17th. Left at four p.m. for Apia, and anchored there at 7 a.m. on the 19th. Lett Apia at 10.40 a.m. on the •JOch for Vavau, arriving at 7.15 a.m. on the 22nd. Left at four p.m. the same day for Haapai, arriving there at 8 a.m. on the 23rd, and left at 10.30 a.m. the same day for Haaparea. Arrived at 2 p.m. the same day, and left at 6 a.m. on the 24th for Nukualofa, arriving at 6 p.m. the same day. Left Nukualofa at 4 p.m. on the 25th, passed Mokokinau at 2.40 p.m., had Tiritiri abeam at 7 p.m., arriving at the wharf at 9 p.m. yesterday. Experienced fresh southerly winds after leaving Russell, till the 10th inst.; thence to arrival at Nukualofa, light to fresh N.E. winds with thick dirty weather ; from there to Samoa had light variable winds and sea ; from Samoa to Nukualofa had fresh S.E. trades ; from there to making the land had fresh to strong i-.E. and S.W. winds and sea: thence to arrival light N.E. winds and smooth sea. The Ovalau will be floated into the Auckland Dock to-morrow for overhaul, and is announced to leave for Tonga and Samoa at 5 p.m. on Wednesday next.

THE WARSHIPS. The Rapid, from this port, arrived at Apia on the 16th inst, after a passage or 18 days, and was to leave for Fiji on the 28th. The German warship Bussard was at Apia when the Ovalau left on the 20th inst. A ISEW LAUNCH. Mr. Greenwood, of Onehunga, is now engaged building a small steamer for Mr. T. H. Baber. The vessel is being built in the old Stamping Company's premises, and is intended for use inside the Manukau Harbour, and will also be used in the fishing industry. Her dimensions are as follow :— Length, overall 46 feet, on keel 40 feet; breadth, 8 feet; depth, 5'3 feet. The steamer is expected to be completed in a few months.

Nukualofa, May 24.—During the past mouth, with the exception of the visits of the irregular mail steamers, shipping has been quiet. Arrivals: Taviuni, s.s., from Samoa, on the 3rd: Fleetwinjf, schooner, from Auckland, on the 12th ; Ovalau, s.s., from Auckland, on the 14th. Sailings: Taviuni, s.s., for Sydney, on the 4th; Ovalau, s.s., for Samoa, via ports, on the loth: Fleetwing, schooner, for Wallis Island, on the 19th. The Fleetwing rather belied her name by making a twenty days' passage from your port hither. The weather was an uncomfortable mixture of strong head winds and calms.
