Miles, manager of the Wellington branch of Messrs. Murray, Roberts, and Co., left for Rarotonga by the Richmond yesterday on business connected with his firm.

Mr. McGowan, Commissioner of Taxes, will be in Auckland next week. To Sir Robert Stout is due the honour of having brought Mr. Poyuton, recently appointed to Otago, from a digger's hut on the West Coast to the position of the magistracy. Kir Robert found him on orie of his visits to the Coast, and seeing in him a man of much promise, he helped him to the top of the tree. By the troopship Tyne, which has arrived at Sydney from Plymouth, the following officers have come to join the Australian Squadron For the Orlando : Naval cadet, Roger Rede ; assistant clerks, W. H. Mr. 11. R. Bush, late junior accountant, on leaving the company's employ to join the Union Bank in this city, was presented with a handsomely-framed illuminated address by the officers of the company. The attorney and superintendent (Mr. G. S. Graham) in handing the game to Mr. Bush expressed on behalf of the officers and himself the courtesy and assiduity which Mr. Bush had displayed In the duties he had so well performed, ind though regretting his severance with one office wished him every success. Yesterday an interesting event took place at the residence of Mr. Samuel Parker, Wellesley-street West, the occasion being the marriage of Mr. Parker's eldest daughter Fanny with Mr. C. E. Dent, late of Sargood, Ewen and Co. The bridesmaids were Miss Lily Parker and Miss Dent, and the groomsmen Mr. Dent's brother and Mr. James Parker. A number of relatives were present. Mr. and Mrs. Dent have left for Napier on their honeymoon trip, and will finally leave Auckland on the 17th proximo as missionaries to the province of Inhambane, South Easb Africa, under the American Methodist Episcopal Mission, conducted by Bishop Tayire. The death is announced of Mr. George C. Hawker, M.L.C., of South Australia, at Adelaide, after a short illnese. Mr. Hawker, who was the second son of the late Admiral Hawker, was born in London in February, 1818, and educated on the Continent and at Trinity College, Cambridge. He took his Master of Arts degree in 1854, and went to South Australia in the following year, embarking in pastoral pursuits. He entered the Assembly in 1858, and he was elected Speaker in 1860, holding that positill 1865. Between 1875 and 1882, Mr. Hawker was Treasurer in the Blyth Ministry, Chief Secretary under Mr. Boucaut, and Commissioner for Public Works with three Administrations. For many years Mr. Hawker represented Tvorth Adelaide in the Assembly, and in 1882 he was given the right ,to bear the title of " honourable" .within the colony. V
