THE UREWERA DIFFICULTY.

[by telegraph.—press association.]

WHAKATANE, Tuesday. The Hon. Mr. Carroll has reached Whakatane on his way to the Urewera Country. Leaving Gisborne on Friday afternoon, he had a rough journey across the mountains. He hopes to reach Te Whaiti, near Galatea, tomorrow evening, where about fifty constabulary are stationed. On this side of the Urewera Country the natives are well disposed towards survey, but on the Galatea side a small section is inclined to give trouble. It is nob anticipated, however, that there will be any serious difficulty. The chief Kereru has sent a message to the recalcitrant natives, urging them to offer no obstruction to the survey.
