Sheridan (Tapu).—The directors of this company have, I understand, decided to curtail operations in the mine pending the completion of the sale of the same to an English syndicate. Karangahake Tailings.— Mr. H.Gordon, who has been having a 12-ton parcel of tailings treated at the Moanataiari battery, which he obtained from his sluicing claim in the river near the Crown Company's battery, has banked a further parcel of 45ozs ldwb melted gold, which makes a total of lllozs ldwt so far obtained from the tailings. A few ounces more are expected from the final cleaning up, which takes place tomorrow morning. . May Quekn.— 6 level in the Saxon section was clear of the' water this morning that had accumulated during the stoppage of the Big Pump for boiler inspection, and consequently a start was made to truck out the mullock broken in the Trenton section during the stoppage, which work will take until about midday to-morrow. When completed, the manager purposes at once resuming the extension of the crosscut, with the aid of the rock drill, in order to intersect the Trenton hangingwall reef, which should be to hand within the next 12 or 15 feet of driving. The workings upon No. 4 reef and north-west lode continue to yield a good class of crushing dirt, in which colours and dabs of gold are seen pretty freely. ___ GOLDEN CROSS G.M. CO. A general meeting of shareholders of the Golden Cross G. M.C., Waitekauri, was held yesterday afternoon in the large room of the Insurance Buildings. Mr. W. S. Wilson presided, and there was a full quorum present in person and by proxy. The sec rotary read the minutes of the Special meeting and the resolutions passed at that meeting held on the 21sb of February, adopting the propositions for the disposal of the proporty of the company. The Chairman then moved, "That the company bo voluntarily wound up ; that for the purpose only of such winding up the affairs of the company, including the collection, realization, and distribution of its property and assets, the powers of the directors shall continue, and in exercising their powers they shall: (a) Finally close the register of shareholders on Thursday, 30th May ; (b) as to 12,000 shares in the Waitekauri Gold Mining Company, Limited (lately incorporated in London), and now owned by the Golden Cross Gold Mining Company (no liability), they shall divide the same amongst and transfer the same to the shareholders in this company whose names shall be on its register, such distribution to be in the proportion of one share in the Waitekauri Gold Mining Company for every two shares held in the Golden Cross Gold Mining Company (no liability); (c) that the remainder and residue of the property not consisting of money shall be converted into money, and that out of moneys arising from such conversion and other moneys belonging to the company, pay all the costs of such distribution and transfer of the said 12,000 shares, and of 'Icompleting the winding up; (e) they shall divide and pay, the surplus equally amongst the shareholders share per share ; and (f) that after such completion of the said winding-up, and the making of such division and payment, they shall dispose of all the books of the company by handing them over to its manager to remain in his custody." The adoption of the series of resolutions was proposed by the chairman, seconded by Mr. E. W. Puckey, and carried. The chairman announced that after the winding-up there would be a dividend of about 19s per share available. On his motion, it was agreed that the directors meet when the register was closed, to deal with the funds available for division amongst the shareholders.

Mr. R. H. Byles, F.G.S., A. Inst. M.M., of London, who was one of the representatives of the capitalists who recently arranged to take over the Woodstock mine,' left last night by steamer for Kuaotunu to inspect the Try Fluke Mine, which has been placed under offer to him with a view to placing it upon the London market. MINE MANAGERS' REPORTS. Imperial (Karangahake, May 25). —The break that I mentioned in my last report has heaved the reef something out of its course, but I do not think it advisable to alter the course of the drive. The country is all that could be wished for, and I think when we pick up the reef again we ought to get gold. If the water in the winze does not take off it will certainly stop sinking any further until we get closer up with the drive. Try FLUKE (Kuaotunu, May 24 Tha, drive on main reef at No. 4 level has been extended 12 feet during this week. The lode in present face is about 2 feet 6 inches thick, and still prospects fairly well. The whole of the ore from 1, 2, and 3 stopes is being crushed at the mill, and is showing up for a payable return. On No. 2 reef the lode varies in size from 18 inches to three feet thick. Occasionally fair prospects are got on the foot and hangiugwall parts of the lode, and a quantity of average ore is sent to the mill from those stopes. In the stopes above intermediate level the lode formation from wall to wall is about seven feet thick ; but is a little split and intermixed with sandstone ribs, which require selecting. In Mariposa section I have five stopes working. The lode here varies in size from 18 inches to three feet, aud a fair supply of ore is coming from this part of the mine. I have on hand from the battery plates up to date 2700z of amalgam. There will be about 450 tons treated by cyanide. New Whau (May 25).—We have risen in the rise four feet during the week and there is now again an improvement in the appearance of the stone which is now broken from the reef. We have now only seven feet to rise before opening out for the drives. The stone now coming from the reef is much like the stone was in the drive driven from the Alburnia Company's boundary. Golden Hill (Manaia, May 23).—Today I broke down what reef there was stripped. That in the drive has opened out to a compact body of quartz 12 inches big, carries a fair percentage of favourable mineral, and showed several strong colours of coarse gold. The reef in rise is 10 inches big and I am pleased to say that from here I obtained several pieces of fair picked stone. The crushing dirt from here is of a good grade and showed colours of gold freely through the quartz broken. I also holed down on reef in floor of level in several places, and the quartz obtained from two of the holes showed colours of gold. The reef along floor would average about eight inches. Katai-Vermont (Kuaotunu, May 24). — Stoping above main level (south end of mine and north of rise), fourth stope 40, and fifth 34, and sixth 29 feet from rise, reef varies from 2 to 3 feet of good battery ore. Top intermediate, north, is in 82 feet, reef has varied from 2 to 5 feet, aud gave out very good stone the whole distance. In the present face it is a little poorer in quality and size, but must be considered a long run of gold (as on this same level it has gone very rich for 52 feet south). The leading stope has also proved itself good for 79 feet into present face north. Nothing has been done above this for some time back. Intermediate south for the 52 feet is as good as ever. Leading stope above the latter .is'driven 17 feet, reef 6 feet wide, and from which really excellent ore is being obtained, equal to any I have seen in the mine in the two latter faces. Stope No. 3 south, over main level, is now in 10feet from the rise, reef is 7 feet wide, the principal of which goes to the mill. Fully one-third of ore now being put through the mill is being taken from old stopes at north end of mine, which has been formerly filled in as useless for old amalgamation process. The mill is working smoothly. Ore going through about same value as hitherto.

Norfolk (May 25).—1t has taken the contractors the whole of the week to timber up and complete their contract. Everything is now ready for starting the rise. Monowai Amalgamated (Waiomo, May 25). —Monowat-aection : No. 1 level, crosscut is in to the large reef, a distance of 14 feet. The hangingwall portion for eight feet in width assayed from £1 10s to £17 per ton. May 21st, sample from mineral ore, value £17 3s per ton; May 21st, sample from boring. £4 3s 2d per ton; May 22nd, sample from boring, £2 3s 3d per ton. At this point, eight feet in from the hangingwall, we crossed a break, composed of rubbly quartz and clay, si* inches thick. Inside of this break the reef nas a different appearance, and is of a more whitish quartz, with do mineral, and is not payable. Che highest assay is only £1 3a 9d per ton. but there its

a different class of ore in the face, which has not been assayed yet. Crown section : There is nothing ot importance to report from here. Stoping is being carried on as usual. Cleaning up at the battery will take place next week. .:■-.>' '

Woodstock United (Karangahake, May 23).— week, when breaking down the No. 2 lode at the too. 3 level, some very good ore was disclosed, and indications of further improvement are not wanting. In the present face the lode is over four feet in thickness, and an average sample of ore, taken right across the face, gave an assay value of £6 10s per ton. Lately, in the fifth stope, the Mo. 2 lode widened out to fully five feet, and the precious metals are freely distributed throughout the whole body of the ore. Along the back of this stope, for a considerable distance, the lode is wider and very much rioher in bullion than was the case in the preceding stope, and this augurs well for the sixth stope, which is now being carried along in the same direction. Since starting from the end of the crosscut, the level has been driven a distance of 38 feet along the line of the No. 3 lode, which improves in quality as work advances upon it southwards. Here another 30 feet of driving will bring us up to and immediately beneath the rich ore shoot, left underfoot at the No. 2 level. This is assuming the strike downwards to be vertical, but if it has anything approaching the inclination northwards that it appeared to have in the upper workings, we should have it in hand very shortly. In the Truro section the contractors have reached Wilson's Break, and they will now have to drive some distance in the country rock before they will again meet with the northern continuation of the Scott lode. At the mill everything works smoothly, and the ore under treatment is about equal in value to that dealt with last month. The second set of amalgamating plates will be in position tomorrow, after which time there will be an increased saving of coarse particles of bullion that are now been caught in the concentrates.

Hazelbank (May 25). —The rise from No. 3 level is being proceeded with ; the quartz that was met with on Wednesday, which turns out to be the No. 2 reef, has been cut into about three feet, but there is no appearance yet of the hangingwall. It is very hard, and not well defined, being mixed with mullock in places, but some of the quartz contains nice mineral, and looks kindly for the precious metal. A little gold was seen in a leader striking out of the cross reef above the No. 2 intermediate level.

Vends (Kuaotunn, May 24). Main level, north-eastern branch, has been extended three feet. The reef is about 18 inches wide and of good quality. No. 2 stope. Northeastern branch, extended eight feet; reef divided by horse ef mullock; hangingwall portion is about 12 inches wide, and shows gold almost at every breaking down ; footwall portion not so good, but am saving the whole. No. 3 stope : North-eastern branch extended six feet; the reef is still very solid, and shows colours of gold frequently ; the reef is from 18 inches to two feet wide. No. 4 stope : north-eastern branch was commenced and has been extended eight feet; the character of the reef is much the same as in No. 3 stope. New Moanataiari (May 25).—At the 150foot level there has now been 100 feet driven on No. 1 reef. The lode formation in the drive going west still continues very mullocky, caused by the soft /clayey nature of the country on the footwall. The hangingwall, however, is a nice clean, firm sandstone, and if the footwall would only make similar, there would be a big chance of the reef making solid quartz, and carrying payable gold. Amalgam for the week : Quartz, 20oz ; surface material, 18oz. New Bonanza (Karangahake, May 24). — In the low level the Talisman reef has been driven upon for a distance of 16 feet. The reef in the face at present is five feet wide, and carries a little cold on the footwall portion of the reef. The country is exactly similar to that worked in the Talisman mine. In the Dubbo section driving is proceeding as usual in the low level crosscut. The country here is much the same as reported in my last. SOUTHERN MINING. ' [Br TKLUUKAIMI. —PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Monday. The Government to-day received a communication from Harcourb and party, of Blue Spur, at Nahura Flat, stating that they had bottomed a new shaft, and from two loads of washdirt got nearly three ounces of gold. As six pennyweights to the load would be wages, the information of the discovery (if reliable) is of considerable importance.
