Date culture in South Australia promises to be a success. Mr. Gill, conservator of forests, recently visited , the artesian bore at Lake Harry, 20 miles distant from Hergobb, in order to make the necessary arrangements for planting out the Algerian date palms according to instructions received from the Government, which would be done as goon as tho land could be fenced and prepared for their 1 reception. He also inspected ' the plantation at Hergotb, and found one palm bearing nine bunches of dates, three of which alone contained 321b weight, while the other six bunches averaged ab least 61b each. This yield, though exceedingly encouraging in itself, is considered even more satisfactory as an evidence of the rapid increase in the annual crop which may probably be expected when once the palms commence bearing, seeing that when this particular tree fruited the year before last ib produced only a little over lib of dates, some of which are still preserved in spirits of wine in the Foresb Department Museum. There are also three other palms in fruit, bearing one, two, and three bunches respectively, and in all probability the total yield of dates this season will, at a moderate estimate, be quite 1001b. ;■•■>.;" ; ' We noticed a great show of Blooker's famous cocoa, at Laurie's, opposite Smith and Caughey's, and very much enjoyed a cup of it inside.[Advt. J"' . • { Our calicoes branded " Water Spray" received the only grand prize awarded for cotton fabrics at the late Paris exhibition. They are . guaranteed absolutely pure and cheapest and best in the Auckland market, obtainable only from Smith and Caughey.
