Our Waihou correspondent writes : — " Quite a gloom was cast on this township by the sudden death of Mrs. Cribb, wife of Mr. Charles Cribb, of this place. The deceased lady had been in Te Aroha, apparently in the best of health, on April 19, but took a sudden chill a day or two after, and was attacked by pleurisy. Dr. Cooper was called in, and prescribed, but as no improvement took place. Doctor Brewis, of Hamilton was telegraphed for, but was too late to overcome the disease, and Mrs. Cribb passed away on April 27. Mrs. Cribb was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Mills, of Te Aroha, who unfortunately had a son drowned in the ill-fated Wairarapa. The greatest sympathy has been expressed for Mr. Cribb, who is left with four young children, and also with Mr. and Mrs. Mills in this fresh affliction. Fully two hundred settlers attended tho funeral (which took place on April 29) to show their respect for tho departed. The Rev. Mr. Evans officiated at the cemetery, and made feeling reference to tho excellent qualities of the deceased, and to the fact that that day six months her brother had been lost on the Wairarapa, and exhorted those present to lay hold upon the glorious truths of the Bible, which alone could sup port them in the hour of trial and bereavement."

There were «wu women in the lock-up last evening, both on charges of drunkenness.
