THE WELLINGTON RACING CLUB'S

MEETING. The above club open their Winter Meeting to-day. The principal event on the programme is the Thompson Handicap (one mile. Fourteen horses are engaged, and the general opinion is that Mr. Evett has well concealed the winner. The Aucklandowned St. Clements reads well at Bsfc. 111b, and should be able to get near the winner. Barm by Bst Clb, comes as a very strong tip from the South and ho and North Atlantic 9it 101b, aupear the most likely to bring about the defeat of Auckland's representative. The following are the acceptances for the principal event: — st lb si lb North Atlantic „ 910 Priince Cole .. 7,0 St. Clements .. 811 Waiukti .. .. 7 5 Barm by .. ..8 5 Lorelei .. ..7 5 Brooklet .. ..7 9 The Artist.. ..7 3 Golden Fleece .. 7 8 .Sea. serpent .. 7 '2 St. J.aura .. ..7 7 Legislator.. ..7 0 Revolution .. 7 (3 Searchlight .. 7 0 [BY TKLKORAPH. —Pit IMS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Tuesday. There is every prospect of a successful gathering, if tho weather holds up, but the the course is certain to be a bit heavy owing to rain. Barmby and St. Clements divide favouritism for the Thompson Handicap. There is little or no straight-out betting, as the chief books are on the double : Thompson Handicap and Steeple, but backers prefer to wait for the day. THE A.J.C. PLATE. From the Sydney Morning Herald of the 22nd ultimo we clip the following account of the race for the A.J.C. Plate, in which Havoc, Chesterman, and the Harvester ran such a great race : — The moment the signal was given Cadet took upon himself the responsibility of pacemaker, and led past the stand by three lengths from Donation, who was six lengths in front of The Harve-ter, Havoc, - anil Chesterman, with Blarnoystone and Cohbity last. When a mile had been travelled Cadet was still in command thirty lengths in from, of Donation, who had an advantage of twenty lengths of The Harvester and Havoc, with the others a length afvay. At the halfmile Cadet was fifty lengths in front, and then the Held began to close upon him, so much so that when passing the stand for the second time Donation had reduced his lead to fifteen lengths, while The Harvester anil Havoc, still waiting on each other, were six lengths away, with the others a length and a-half off. As they reached the seven I longs post Cadet became very weary, and Don tion, on whom Warden was hard at work, was within three lengths, with The Harvester being ridden for his life, Chesterman also at his top, and Havoc still pulling hard two lengths away, and Blarneystone and Cohbity (who broke down) following in sad trouble. Donation, Havoc, and Chesterman closed upon Cadet at the tlve-furlongs nost.and, as the grey beat a retreat, Havoc and Chesterman were left to fight it out with The Harvester hard upon them. When well inside the half distance. Chesterimin showed in front, but Havoc was not quite done, and with one supreme effort tho gallant son of Nordenfeldt and Frailty came again with undeniable gamoness, and The Harvester, making a gallant effort on the left, the trio settled down to the best finish for a three-miles race that has over been seen in Australia. Stride for stddo they battled it out, and Havoc swerving out into the centre of the course, edged Chesterman and The Harvester with him, and so they raced locked level to the post; which Havoc reached half a length in front of Chesterman, who boat The Harvester by a short head for second place. Blarnoystone was seven lengths off, Donation eight lengths from him, and Cadet was beaton off. Time, sm, KSs. The betting at the start was : 2 to 1 v. Havoc, 7 to 2 r. The Harvester, C to 1 v. Cobbity, 9 to I v. Chesterman. WANGANUI JOCKEY CLUB'S WINTER MEETING. [BY TELEGRAPH.— PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wanganoi, Tuesday. The following acceptances were received to-night for the W.J.C.
