Ab a meeting of the supporters of local option a resolution was passed condemning the action of the Premier in delaying the Local Option Bill till next session as totally unjustifiable, and demanding immediate action.

A SHIP ON FIRE. Sydney, April 2. The captain of the Annie Maud, which has arrived from Rio, reports falling in with the barquentine Celestina, from Swansea to Magellan's Straits, on fire. The vessel was boarded,, when a message was found, stating that the crew had left in boats. The crew of the Annie Maud succeeded in getting the flames partially under, and then sailed the derelict to Rio, where the fire was extinguished, and tho snip handed over to the British Consul. At Rio ib was learnt that the crew were picked up by another vessel.

DYNAMITE OUTRAGE.

Sydney, April 2.

Two iron pipes exploded near the free labourers camp ab Minni last nighb, somewhat seriously injuring two policemen. An examination proved that the pipes had been packed with dynamite and stones, and there is every indication thab an outrage was intended on the free labourers. A strong force of police has been senb to Minni, as great hostility is being displayed towards the free labourers by the unionists and their wives. Crowds surround them, and take forcible measures to prevent their going to work.

THE NEWCASTLE MINERS.

Newcastle, April 2,

If the ballot now being taken favours a general strike, the miners intend to demand an increase of the hewing rate to 4s 2d, as the condition on which they will return to work.

The men have accepted a reduction of threepence ab the Bur wood pit, and will shortly resume work.

SELECTORS' RENTS.

Melbourne, April 2.

The Crown Law Department has given a fortnight's notice to selectors to arrange for the payment of arrears, otherwise proceedings will be taken. /

THE ARREST OF A CLAIMANT.] Melbourne, April 2 William Rand, claimant of the Rand *

estates, has been remanded, and in the meantime a more serious charge will b< preferred against him. When arrested he was living in a large mansion which he had rented on the strength of his representations, at a rental of £6 per week. He lived in great style, and kept a private secretary. Two families who were living with him had been promised lucrative positions when ha came into the estates, and on the sfcrenpth of these promises both had sold out their businesses in order to join him.
