On Monday, the 18th instant, the 30th anniversary of the arrival of pioneer settlers of the Bombay district; was commemorated by a picnic in Mr. James Harris' paddock, better known as Baird's Hill, kindly lent for the occasion. The place chosen is the prettiest place in the district for a picnic, the view from it being of unsurpassing beauty, with a fine belt of lovely puriris for shade from the sun. A committee of young people, viz.. Misses Wilson, S. Sharp, A. Donovan,' J. Suetnean, and Messrs. R. Donovan, A. Evans, H. Carter, jun., sons and daughters of old settlers, were appointed to carry out the arrangements, and right well they did their work, they being busy from early morn in cutting up eatables, etc., and decorating the hall. The day being fine, there was a great muster in the afternoon, when a very pleasant time was tpent in racing for the children and games of different kinds indulged in, the committee working assiduously for the enjoyment of all present. Tea and all the good things accompanying were supplied in abundance. In the eveninir an adjournment was made to the hall, when a very pleasant evening was spent, the first part in songs, recitations, etc., the following ladies and gentlemen contributing, viz., Mrs. Roke, Misses Evans, A. McClune, Muir, Louisa Donovan, and Messrs. G. Mackey, French (of Wairarapa fame), E. C. Purdie, H. Sawyer, F. Pulman, Cuthbert, T. Bailie, Osmond, and S. Flay. The inevitable dance took place afterwards. Mr. R. Donovan made a most excellent M.C. He also presided With credit during the musical part of the programme. Mr. McCarthy catered for the dancers with his usual ability.—[Own Correspondent.]
