' 160 Beautiful weather was experienced for the match, but very little interest was taken in the game. The wicket was in a sodden state as a result of the recent heavy rains. Stoddart was not well enough to play, and Phillipson took his place as captain of the team. Trott winning the toss sent the Englishmen to bat. but with the exception of Brockwell and McLaren, who played merrily, the team gave a feeble display. Despite the fact that the wicket hid not improved the Victorians made a very good start, Bruce, Faver, and A. Trott batting splendidly. The Utter got his runs in capital stylo. During the early part of the Victorian innings rungetting was alow, the batsmen playing steadily, but the pace livened towards the close of the play. Harry TrottVbowling completely baffled the visitors. He main--1 tained a five-length throughout.
